10 one-hit wonders only real Gen Xers remember

One-hit wonders get a bad reputation they do not always deserve. The assumption is that a single chart peak means a fluke, a novelty, a band that stumbled onto something and never understood it. But some of the most perfectly formed pop songs in history came from artists who only connected once, and that one connection was enough to outlast entire careers.

10 one-hit wonders only real Gen Xers remember

That is especially true of the 1980s, a decade that produced an almost supernatural volume of memorable singles from bands whose second song no one could name. The era of MTV, mixtapes, and FM radio rewarded hooks above everything else, and some artists delivered one hook so perfectly constructed it still plays in your head forty years later, unbidden and unstoppable.

These are ten songs that owned a moment and then disappeared. Every Gen Xer with a radio knows them.

Whip It — Devo (1980)

Red flower-pot hats, robotic choreography, synth-pop that sounded like nothing else.Devohad a cult following and a long career, but in the US mainstream, Whip It was the whole story. It peaked at number 14 and never left.

Turning Japanese — The Vapors (1980)

A post-punk guitar hook so instantly recognizable it barely needed a chorus. The Vaporsdissolved shortly after it peaked. The song has appeared in films, ads, and television ever since.

Mickey — Toni Basil (1982)

A cheerleader routine set to an arena-sized chant.Toni Basilwas already 38 when it hit number one. She had a distinguished background in choreography. The follow-up singles went nowhere.

The Safety Dance — Men Without Hats (1982)

An inexplicably catchy synth-pop hook and a message that seemed to be about dancing but may or may not have been about nuclear war.Men Without Hatsnever charted in the US again.

Too Shy — Kajagoogoo (1983)

The hair was a genre in itself.Kajagoogoofired lead singer Limahl shortly after the song topped the UK charts, only to discover they could not chart without him.

Der Komissar — After the Fire (1983)

Falco had the German-language hit first, but this English-language coverAfter the Firecovered it, and that version conquered American radio. The band broke up the following year. No other single came close.

Somebody’s Watching Me — Rockwell (1984)

The paranoid synth groove was irresistible, and Michael Jackson’s cameo on the chorus helped considerably.Rockwellwas the son of Motown founder Berry Gordy, reportedly hidden from label executives. The follow-ups disappeared.

Sunglasses at Night — Corey Hart (1984)

A synth riff built on a single absurd premise that lodged permanently in the brain.Corey Harthad modest success in Canada for years but never cracked the American top 40 again.

Major Tom (Coming Home) — Peter Schilling (1983)

A synth-pop sequel to Bowie’s Space Oddity, sung partly in German, that somehow became a US top-15 hit.Peter Schillingcontinued recording in Europe but never returned to the American charts.

Puttin’ on the Ritz — Taco (1983)

A 1930 big-band standard resurrected as a synth-pop novelty by a Dutch-Indonesian singer in white tie and tails.Tacopeaked at number four and then vanished. The Metropolis-inspired video was one of early MTV’s most-played clips.

Wrap up

The 1980s had no shortage of great bands with long careers. But the one-hit wonders may have understood something the survivors did not. Sometimes one perfect moment is more than enough.

Savannah Guthrie returns to 'Today' anchor desk for first time since mother's disappearance

NEW YORK (AP) —Savannah Guthriewas back and almost all business at NBC's “Today” show anchor desk on Monday, marking a return for the first time in more than two months since her mother's disappearance. “Here we go, ready or not," Guthrie said as the show opened. “Let’s do the news.”

After running through a series of news headlines, Guthrie said that “we are so glad that you started our week with us and it's good to be home.” Her co-host, Craig Melvin said that “it's good to have you back at home.”

She greeted longtime co-worker Al Roker with “Good morning, Sunshine,” when he noted that it was good to see her on the set. At the end of the first 25-minute portion of the show, she offered Melvin a high-five.

Emotions got the better of her before the last half hour, when she joined her colleagues in front of fans gathered at the show's Rockefeller Center studio. She fought back tears when one fan was seen with a “Welcome home Savannah” shirt, and clutched colleague Jenna Bush Hager's arm and thanked people for their support.

Guthrie says it's hard to go forward not knowing what happened

Guthrie, one of morning television's most recognizable faces, has been a “Today” host since 2012. She has acknowledged that she's a changed person and that it'shard to go forwardnot knowing what happened to Nancy Guthrie, who authorities believe was taken against her will from her Arizona home.

Despitean intense searchinvolving thousands of federal and local officers and volunteers, there has been no sign of the 84-year-old mother of three since she was reported missing Feb. 1.

The “Today” show has followed the story closely for the past two months, but it wasn't mentioned during the first hour of her return on Monday. Bringing things back to normal was clearly intentional: Her return wasn't referenced during interviews with NBC's Gabe Gutierrez at the White House and military analyst Steve Warren on the show's set.

Hoda Kotb, the former anchor who had filled in for Guthrie for much of the past two months and interviewed her former colleague, wasn't on set Monday.

“Today” has seen a ratings boost over the past two months and has even eclipsed ABC's “Good Morning America” as the leader in the morning show ratings. The shows aren't the profit generators they once were for the networks, but the rivalry is still intense.

“Today” averaged 3.1 million viewers for the first three months of the year, up nearly 9% in an era most broadcast programs lose viewers. It's hard to tell how much the Guthrie story had to do with that: NBC also aired the Super Bowl and the Winter Olympics in February, and both events tend to help a morning show's ratings.

“Good Morning America” averaged 2.93 million viewers, up 2% over 2025 while “CBS Mornings” plunged 17% to 1.76 million, according to the Nielsen company.

As part of avideo messagereleased by her New York church on Easter Sunday, Guthrie spoke about feeling “moments of deep disappointment with God, the feeling of utter abandonment.” But she said the resurrection is not fully celebrated “if we do not acknowledge the feelings of loss, pain, and yes, death.”

In announcing her return to NBC's flagship morning show, Guthrie said she was uncertain whether she'll feel like she still belongs.

“It’s hard to imagine doing it because it’s such a place of joy and lightness,” she said just over a week ago on “Today” duringher first interviewsince the disappearance. “I can’t come back and try to be something that I’m not. But I can’t not come back because it’s my family.”

She didn't anticipate faking her way through the show, which is normally light-hearted with a mix of serious, breaking news.

Guthrie's mom had made occasional visits to show's set

There had been a great deal of speculation about whether she would return.

“I want to smile, and when I do it will be real,” she told Hoda Kotb, who came back to “Today” to fill in while Guthrie focused on the search. “Being there is joyful, and when it's not I'll say so.”

Nancy Guthrie made occasional appearances on “Today” over the years, once taking part in a cooking demonstration and surprising her daughter on the set. When Savannah Guthrie returned to her hometown of Tucson in 2025 for a segment recorded for the show, the two visited one of their favorite restaurants and talked about their love of Arizona.

The Guthrie family has offered a $1 million reward for information leading to the recovery of their mother.

Authorities believe Nancy Guthrie waskidnapped, abducted or otherwise takenagainst her will after finding blood near the doorstep of her home in the foothills outside Tucson. The FBI laterreleased surveillance videosshowing a masked man on the porch that night. Volunteers and search teamsscoured the nearby desert terrainfilled with cactuses, bushes and boulders in the first weeks after she vanished.

But attention has faded from an investigation that was declared to be a top priority for the FBI and local authorities. Investigators have not released new evidence in weeks and say the number of tips has slowed. The FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department both said late last week that they had no updates.

Early on, some media outlets reported receiving ransom messages tied to the case. Guthrie said she and her siblings responded to two that they believed were real and offered to pay.

Guthrie said her celebrity status might be the reason her mother was taken, but said that possibility was “too much to bear.”

Associated Press correspondents John Seewer in Toledo, Ohio, and Sarah Brumfield in Washington contributed to this report.

1970 Hit Ranked Among Best Rock Love Songs Took 20 Minutes to Write

Elton John's 1970 hit "Your Song" is one of the greatest love songs ever written. Theromanticballad came together in record time, with John composing the melody in just 20 minutes after his songwriting partnerBernie Taupingave him the lyrics he had scribbled down.

Parade

In 2018, Taupin told theIndependent, "The original lyric was written very rapidly on the kitchen table of Elton's mother's [house] in Northwood Hills in the suburbs of London, if I recall, on a particularly grubby piece of exercise paper."

The songwriter added, "It's the voice of someone who hasn't experienced love in any way. It's a very virginal song."

Taupin shared, "I think 'Your Song' is a gem. Our classic, I'm not sure. I'll let others decide that. But it's like an old friend, it means so many things on equally as many levels. It's certainly proved its worth, and I've heard it sung a million times."

"It's like a good dog, it's always there," he added.

In a 2013Rolling Stoneinterview, John opened up about how Taupin's lyrics inspired him to fill out the melody of "Your Song" very quickly.

"What can I say, it's a perfect song. It gets better every time I sing it," he shared.

"I remember writing it at my parents' apartment in North London, and Bernie giving me the lyrics, sitting down at the piano and looking at it and going, 'Oh, my God, this is such a great lyric, I can't f**k this one up,'" the singer explained.

John noted, "It came out in about 20 minutes, and when I was done, I called him in and we both knew. I was 22, and he was 19, and it gave us so muchconfidence."

"Empty Sky[his debut album] was lovely, but it was very naive. We went on to do more esoteric stuff like 'Take Me to the Pilot,' of course, but musically, this was a big step forward," he shared. "And the older I get, the more I sing these lyrics, and the more they resonate with me."

"Your Song" ranked #6 on a 2025Billboardlist of staffer picks for "50 Best Rock Love Songs"

All About Bill Murray's Grandchildren, Including Son Luke's 4 Kids

Bill Murray has six sons from two marriages and at least four grandchildren

NEED TO KNOW

  • Luke Murray, a college basketball coach, has four children with his wife, Kara Murray

  • The Groundhog Day actor has frequently attended Luke's college basketball games with his grandkids

Bill Murrayis a longtime actor in the public eye, but he has kept his family life private.

TheGhostbustersstarbecame a fatherin 1982 when he welcomed son Homer with his first wife, Margaret Kelly. Bill and Kelly welcomed sonLukethree years later. After their 1996 divorce, he welcomed four more children — sons Caleb, Jackson, Cooper and Lincoln — with his second wife, Jennifer Butler, whom he was married to from 1997 to 2008.

Although he keeps much of his children's lives private, Bill has occasionally supported them publicly in their respective careers. In particular, he has been seencheering on his second-oldest son, Luke, while he worked as an assistant coach at the University of Connecticut's men's basketball team.

While many of his children also keep their personal lives off social media, Luke has frequently brought along his children to his college basketball games and introduced them when he was announced as the head coach of Boston College's men's basketball team in March 2026. Luke and his wife, Kara, are parents to sons Luke Jr. and Cash and daughters Celine and Leila, per hisUConn bio.

Here's everything to know about Bill Murray's grandchildren.

Bill has at least four grandchildren. In September 2015, Luke wed Kara in Philadelphia, and Bill evenskipped out on acceptinghis Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie to attend the nuptials.

Bill became a grandfather when Luke and Kara welcomed their first son, Luke Jr. The couple went on to have another son, Cash, and later added daughters Celine and Leila to the family.

Over the years, Luke has had the support of his father, wife and children as he embarked on a successful coaching career. Luke spent years in men's basketball coaching jobs at Louisville, Xavier, Rhode Island, Towson and Wagner before moving back to Connecticut — where he was raised and attended college — with his family.

Luke Murray cuts down the net with his sons after the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament National Championship game on April 03, 2023 in Houston, Texas.

Bill has been a staple at his son's coaching games over the years and has occasionally been seen with some of his grandchildren in the stands.

WhenUConn won the NCAA Men's Championshipin 2023,Bill proudly watched in the standsand later joined Luke on the court. At the end of the game, Luke climbed the ladder with Luke Jr. and Cash underneath him to cut a piece of the net. Most recently, Murray attended the2026 March MadnessElite Eight game, whereUConn beat Duke in a major upset.

In March 2026, Luke accepted a job as the head coach of the men's basketball team at Boston College and said that his family was "pumped" to move to the city.

"I'm excited to be here," he said in anInstagram videofor the basketball team. "My family is pumped up to be here."

Luke was joined by all four of his children and Kara in hisintroductory press conferenceon March 31. Kara and the three older kids sat in the front row, while Luke's mom took care of his youngest child behind the scenes.

"Today's a day to celebrate Luke Murray, but I'd be remiss if I didn’t compliment his kids," University spokesperson Jack Dunn said at the end. "Kara and Luke, I've never met four nicer, more polite children in my life. I have four kids of my own, and trust me, they weren’t like this."

Meanwhile, Luke said that his dad was "excited" about the move, as well.

"I know he’s excited to come up to Boston. He loves the city. He’s been around this campus a little bit," Luke said, according tosports reporter Trevor Hass. "I’m sure he’ll be a fixture here as well."

Bill has spoken about parenthood

While Bill allows his children to carve their own paths and live as privately as they'd like, he has occasionally spoken about his own approach to parenting. In a 2003 interview withRolling Stone, Bill reflected on the feeling of welcoming a child for the first time.

"People only talk about what a joyous experience it is, but there is terror: Your life, as you know it, is over," he shared. "It’s over the day that child is born. It’s over, and something completely new starts."

Nearly a decade later in a 2012 interview withEsquire, Bill spoke about his approach to fatherhood and explained that he learned he just wanted his children to be at their "best."

"If you bite on everything they throw at you, they will grind you down. You have to ignore a certain amount of stuff," he said. "The thing I keep saying to them lately is: 'I have to love you, and I have the right to ignore you.' "

He added, "All I want is you at your best — you making this an easier home to live in, you thinking of others."
