1964 Classic Rock Hit Ranked Among ‘The Greatest Songs of All Time’ Became a Career-Defining Anthem for the Kinks

In 1964, the Kinks released what would become their breakthrough hit with the song“You Really Got Me.”The single, from the English rock band’s self-titled 1964 album, peaked at No. 7 on theBillboard Hot 100on Nov. 28. 1964 and became an international hit, firmly establishing the band as one of the top British crossover acts of the 1960s.

Rolling Stoneranked “You Really Got Me” as one of the greatest songs of all time, describing theRay Davies-penned classic as a “deliberately raw rave-up” with an “immortal, blistering riff.”

"The song came out of a working-class environment," Kinks guitarist Dave Davies once told the outlet. "People fighting for something."

The song defined the Kinks

Early on, the Davies brothers knew they had a hit with “You Really Got Me.” Originally inspired by a female fan he spotted dancing at a club, Ray Davies proclaimed it to be his all-time greatest song.

"When I left the studio, I felt great. It may sound conceited, but I knew it was a great record," he once said of 'You Really Got Me," perUltimate Classic Rock. "I said I'd never write another song like it, and I haven't."

Dave Davies described the breakout Kinks hit as “such a pure record.” “It’s a love song for street kids,” he was quoted as saying in the book,You Really Got Me: The Story of the Kinks.“They’re not going to wine and dine you, even if they knew how to chat you up. ‘I want you—come ‘ere.”

The Kinks song was covered by Van Halen

In 1978, Van Halen released a cover version of “You Really Got Me” on their debut album. While the song was a radio hit, Dave Davies felt it missed the mark.

“When I first heard Van Halen’s version of ‘You Really Got Me,’ I laughed,” the Kinks legend toldGuitar Playerin an interview. “It just seemed so exaggerated. It really misses the point of the whole meaning of the song: four working-class guys, struggling to do something different. In the original record, you can sense that in its energy, the roughness. It’s very impure.”

Still, Davies acknowledged that the Kinks had a big influence on later bands.

“It’s always very flattering for people to copy you,” he said. “We’ve been copied more than a lot of people would care to admit. Ray’smusichas impressed upon and influenced a lot of people in many different ways.”

Israel's Ben-Gvir visits flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound

JERUSALEM, April 12 (Reuters) - Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir visited the flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem on Sunday, saying ‌he was seeking greater access for Jewish worshippers and drawing condemnation ‌from Jordan.

Reuters

The compound in Jerusalem's walled Old City is one of the most sensitive sites in the Middle East https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/where-is-al-aqsa-mosque-why-is-it-so-important-islam-2023-04-05/. Known to Jews as Temple Mount, it is the most sacred site in Judaism and is Islam's third-holiest site.

Under a delicate, decades-old arrangement with Muslim authorities, it is administered by a Jordanian religious foundation and ‌Jews can visit but may not pray there.

Suggestions that Israel would alter the rules have sparked outrage among Muslims and ignited violence in the past.

"Today, I feel like the owner here," Ben-Gvir said in a video filmed at the site and distributed by his office. "There is still more to do, more to improve. I keep pushing the Prime Minister (Benjamin Netanyahu) to do more and more — ‌we must keep rising higher and higher."

A statement from the Jordanian foreign ministry said it considered Ben-Gvir's visit to be a violation of the status quo agreement at the site and "a desecration of its sanctity, a condemnable escalation and an unacceptable provocation".

Ben-Gvir's spokesman said the minister was seeking greater access ‌and prayer permits for Jewish visitors. He also said that Ben-Gvir had prayed at the site.

There was no immediate comment from Netanyahu's office. Previous such visits and statements by Ben-Gvir ‌have prompted Netanyahu announcements saying that there is no change in Israel's policy of keeping the status quo.

Muslim, Christian and Jewish sites, including Al-Aqsa had been largely closed https://www.reutersconnect.com/item/al-aqsa-mosque-reopens-after-40-day-closure-by-israel/dGFnOnJldXRlcnMuY29tLDIwMjY6bmV3c21sX01UMUFOQURMMDAwT1hBQUxB to the public during the Iran war https://www.reuters.com/world/iran/. ‌There was no immediate sign of unrest on Sunday after Ben-Gvir's visit.

Heather Graham Recalls Being a 'Nerdy' Teen, Says Classmates Realized They Should've 'Paid Attention to Her' After First Movie

  • Now 56, the actress recalled being a “nerdy” teen despite playing a popular cheerleader in the comedy

  • Graham later went on to star in Boogie Nights, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and more

From teen comedies to cult classics,Heather Grahamhas built a career defined by versatility and unexpected turns.

While many audiences remember her for standout performances inBoogie NightsandAustin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, her journey began much earlier.

At just 17, she landed a key role inLicense to Drive, a coming-of-age comedy that introduced her to Hollywood. Reflecting on that moment decades later, Graham recently recalled how her high school classmates reacted after she was cast.

“[The movie] came out right as I was graduating,” Graham told Jesse Tyler Ferguson on hisDinner's On Me Podcaston April 7. “And I think people were like, 'Oh, maybe we should have like, paid attention to her.' ”

During their conversation, Graham opened up about her teenage years, describing a version of herself far removed from the confident characters she would later portray.

In 1988’sLicense to Drive, she played Mercedes Lane, the effortlessly cool love interest — an ironic contrast to how she saw herself at the time.

“I was nerdy…you know, I was smart and I was just like, nobody thought I was that pretty," Graham recalled. “So I got this job as like, the popular, pretty cheerleader, and I had very bad style and bad hair and makeup. Like I did not know how to like, you know, do that.”

That early role, however, set the stage for a career full of contrasts. InBoogie Nights, Graham took on the emotionally layered role of Rollergirl, a far cry from her teen comedy beginnings, while inAustin Powers, she leaned into comedy as Felicity Shagwell, a confident and playful spy. Each performance showcased a different side of her range.
