“Off Campus”' Mika Abdalla Breaks Down That 'Heated' Finale Cliffhanger and Teases Season 2 (Exclusive)

NEED TO KNOW

  • Season 1 of Off Campus leaves off with a major cliffhanger involving Allie (Mika Abdalla) and Dean (Stephen Kalyn)

  • Abdalla breaks down what's to come for Allie after that twist and teases season 2 as she reveals she's received the first two scripts: "It's all very real"

  • Off Campus is now streaming on Prime Video

There's a bit of a mess on Allie Hayes's hands at the end ofOff Campusseason 1.

After getting involved with Dean (Stephen Kalyn) — Allie and Dean are the subject of the third book inElle Kennedy's series,The Score, and season 1 of the Prime Video show adapted the first book,The Deal— after her breakup with Sean (Riley Davis), Allie started to panic about falling back into old patterns. In the hopes of slowing things down between her and Dean, she suggested they both sleep with other people, and then she slept with the mysterious Carter St. James (Charlie Evans), whom she'd previously kissed, after running into him on campus.

In the final moments of season 1, Carter walked into Malone's and a nightmare unfolded for Allie. Dean put the pieces together that she had slept with Carter, just after he revealed that he didn't want to see other people, and Carter St. James's true identity was revealed: he's actually Hunter Davenport, the protagonist of Kennedy'sThe Play, a book in herOff Campusspinoff series,Briar U.

"We were all surprised by it,"Mika Abdalla, who plays Allie, tells PEOPLE of the twist. "I think it's really great. "It's really fun to throw someone else into the mix for Allie, just fresh out of her relationship, freaking out about this relationship [with Dean]."

"It's nice to pump the brakes a little bit," Abdalla, 26, says. "I'm excited to see what goes on from there, because that's a pretty heated way to end the season."

She reveals the season was originally "supposed to end differently, and then we had to change that, for reasons that will be revealed later," and the Hunter twist was instead introduced.

Hunter's arrival in the series was "like the freaking nuclear codes," Abdalla says. "We needed to not talk about that. No one was allowed to know who that man was, which was hilarious." The cast was explicitly told not to "follow" Evans on social media or otherwise engage with him to avoid spoiling his arrival. "We weren't allowed to do a freaking thing with that man. They kept it locked up."

Showrunner Louisa Levy tells PEOPLE that the decision to bring Hunter into the fold "allowed us to tee up potential future seasons that we might be able to explore, and also tee up a little bit of Dean's backstory that we might be able to get into in future seasons as well."

As she points out, Hunter is a character that appears inThe Score,Dean and Allie's book, "just in a small way," so she and the writers found it a "fun opportunity" to "pull from the later books and use those characters to build out" the world on the college campus. "I have no idea how fans are going to react to it, but I'm very excited to see."

Off Campuswas renewed forseason 2before season 1 premiered, but Prime Video has not yet confirmed which couple it'll follow. On her character's behalf, Abdalla says she is "not excited" about the next installment, as she anticipates some major challenges for Allie. "I am excited about it as an actor," she says. "I am excited for the deep emotional turmoil that Allie is going through, because I think that'll be a lot of fun [to play], and that's not really something I got to play around with too, too much this season."

"I am excited to see the inner workings of her. It's really fun to play such a vibrant, larger-than-life character, who also has these extremely deep feelings about herself and the world around her. It's such a balance," Abdalla continues. "I'm excited to do the puzzle of Allie."

Abdalla has received scripts for the first two episodes of season 2, she confirms, which is "very exciting," and the cast returns to Vancouver to start filming shortly. "It's all very real," she says of the next installment.

Off Campusseason 1 is now streaming on Prime Video.

Suzette Charles Criticizes Miss America 42 Years After Inheriting Crown from Vanessa Williams Due to Nude Photo Scandal

NEED TO KNOW

  • After Williams was forced to resign following a nude photo scandal, Charles inherited the crown, becoming the second Black woman to be named Miss America (also after Williams, who became the first Black winner)

  • In an interview with The Guardian over 40 years later, Charles condemned the organization's response to Williams' scandal and criticized the pageant system more broadly

Suzette Charlesis looking at pageantry with a more critical eye, over 40 years after she held the coveted title of Miss America.

The singer and actress, 63, placed as the runner-up at Miss America in 1984, finishing just behindVanessa Williams, who made history as the first Black woman to wear the sash. Williams, now 63, wasforced to resign after her nude photos— which she had taken years prior and under the promise of anonymity — were sold and published inPenthousemagazine without her consent. Charles then inherited the crown, making her the second Black woman to be named Miss America.

Decades later, the former contestant looked back on her journey to the national stage in an interview withThe Guardian. It started after she won Miss New Jersey at the state level. She remembered feeling "shocked" that she lost: "I thought my performance was stellar," Charles told the outlet.

Speaking toThe Guardianfor the profile published on Friday, May 15, Charles criticized Miss America officials for their response to the scandal, knocking the pageant organization for punishing Williams "so many months later."

Charles described her crowning as "a bittersweet acceptance," and she expressed disapproval with the storied contest more broadly.

“The initial plan was to empower women, but we're in a different phase," she said in the interview. "I think it's probably time to say goodbye.”

Williams spoke to PEOPLE about her fall from Miss America glory in 2024, about eight years after she returned to the pageant to serve as the head judge for the Miss America 2016 pageant.

“There was a tremendous amount of onus, pressure, shame, judgment,” Williams said, thinking back on the scandal that dominated the world's news cycle for weeks. “I took all that on as a 21-year-old. It was global. You can fail quietly, but that was a worldwide fail.”

To mark her appearance on the judging panel, then-CEO of Miss America Sam Haskell issued a public apology to Williams.

“I have been a close friend to this beautiful and talented lady for 32 years,” he said. “You have lived your life in grace and dignity and never was it more evident than during the events of 1984 when you resigned.

Haskell continued, “Though none of us currently in the organization were involved then on behalf of today's organization I want to apologize to you and to your mother Ms. Helen Williams. I want to apologize for anything that was said or done that made you feel any less the Miss America you are and the Miss America you always will be.”

  • Dano's new drama The Wizard of the Kremlin is in theaters May 15

Paul Danois enjoying the ride and embracing life as a parent as he glides through his 40s.

The actor turns 42 in June, but Dano, who stars in the new movieThe Wizard of the Kremlin, tells PEOPLE that fatherhood has played more of a role in changing his life than getting older itself.

"Probably the first thing I think of is actually not age that changed me, but probably parenthood is the first thing — where becoming a parent has forced me to grow up in a much different way," he says in a recent interview. "So I think more than turning 40 or or 41 or 42, it's sort of learning through my kids and how to meet them at the ages that they're at and what they ask of you."

Dano, who began acting professionally in the late 1990s and broke out in the 2000s,sharestwo childrenwith hispartnerZoe Kazan. Their daughter, Alma Bay, was born in August 2018, followed by their son in October 2022.

Off-screen, the couple live a quiet life in Brooklyn, New York. However, on the big screen, Dano is known for playing real-life figures like The Beach Boys'Brian WilsonandThe Batman's villain The Riddler, among other roles. Dano's latest movie sees the actor portray a fictional Russian man who rises to become one ofVladimir Putin's chief political advisors in the 1990s and 2000s.

"I think I'm very fortunate. I think life mostly gets better, so far," Dano says. "With age, we'll see if that hits a downward turn soon enough. I certainly can't eat as much as I used to, but otherwise, we're in good enough shape so far."

Dano costars in the new movie withJude Law, who portrays Putin, 73, as well asAlicia Vikander, Tom Sturridge, Will Keen andJeffrey Wright. The movie, which was filmed in Latvia, follows Dano's character Baranov as he shares the story behind his rise to power within Putin's regime in Moscow with Wright's reporter character.

Making a movie so intertwined with 21st-century politics required both Dano and Law, 53, to do "our homework, so to speak" in order to better understand the subject matter.

"Honestly, no," Dano tells PEOPLE when asked if he generally takes an interest in history or current events. "But this made me interested, and it happened very naturally."

Dano also tells PEOPLE he enjoyed getting to spend time with Vikander, 37, and Law in Latvia during filming.

"I would say that on set is not really about downtime ever. I think it's really about staying in the soup of the character or the piece, but off set, we all need a bite of food and a drink at the end of the day or on the weekend," he says. "So, really lovely people to spend time with. Loved getting to hang with them and get to know them a bit, explore a new place. . .

Dano adds, "So it's kind of a tale of two experiences: one, where you're all in a hotel together and on your day off, you want to share a meal, and the other, the weekdays where you're really about the work."

He clarified that the pair were simply cordial co-passengers and didn't interact much at all.

"When I say 'spent,' [I mean] in the same vicinity. Everyone was very cordial, very respectful," Lachey, 52, said of Simpson, 45, to whom he was married from 2002-2006.

Lachey told Cohen that their respective families were aboard the airplane with them, including Simpson's children and her mother, Tina.

Cohen referred to Simpson's mom as Lachey's "former mother-in-law" — a phrase Lachey repeated, before telling Cohen that he's "not familiar with where they stand at this point," but that Simpson's husband Eric Johnson, from whom sheseparated in 2025, was on the plane as well, and stated that "it was fine."

NEED TO KNOW

  • Lance Bass surprised the audience by running from Titanique, narrowly making it on stage in time

  • Joey Fatone has a history with Broadway and & Juliet, previously starring in the musical and co-producing Titanique

It was the year 2000 all over again at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on Tuesday, May 12, asJoey FatoneandLance Bassreunited to perform *NSYNC's No. 1 hit "It's Gonna Be Me" for a crowd of cheering fans.

The special moment was a part of a month-long celebration Broadway's& Julietis throwing in celebration of the song, which has become a meme over the years on social media as a way to mark the beginning of May thanks toJustin Timberlake's pronunciation of the word "Me."

Areference to the joke is even made in the musical, which is set to a score of others songs by hitmaker Max Martin including “Since U Been Gone,” “Roar,” “Baby One More Time,” “Larger Than Life,” “That’s The Way It Is,” “Can’t Stop the Feeling" and more.

Tuesday's performance of the song by Fatone and Bass nearly didn't happen, however.

Theatergoers knew Fatone was leading the post-show sing-along, his role as host announced when the event was revealed earlier this month. But Bass had previous plans on the books, with tickets to see another Broadway hit — the hilarious Tony Award-nominated Best MusicalTitanique— across the way.

Turns out,Titanique's90-minute runtime worked to Bass' advantage. He ran through Times Square from the St. James Theatre, making it on stage just in time to surprise Fatone and the& Julietaudience.

"He made it! He made it!" Fatone cheered, in video of the moment shared by& Juliet's Instagram page.

“I almost got hit by six taxicabs, but I made it by the last note!" said Bass.

Fatone, 49, is no stranger to& Juliet. The singer and actor perviously starred in the musical as Lance, both on Broadway and during a recent stint on the tour's stop in Orlando, Florida.

He's also no stranger to Broadway, with roles inLittle Shop of HorrorsandRentthroughout his career. He's even a co-producer onTitaniquethis season, with his other *NSYNC bandmate,JC Chasez.

Bass, 47, has a Broadway acting credit of his own, too. He previously played Link Larkin during the run ofHairspray.

Meanwhile, *NSYNC fans will get more opportunities to see Fatone and Bass together soon.

The two are hosting a new mixology competition series namedCocktail Wars, which will premiered this summer on Versant-owned network E!

Announced this week at the NBCUniversal Upfronts, the 10-part series will see bartenders go head-to-head in a high-stakes cocktail competition, where creativity, precision and taste will determine who takes home a $10,000 prize each week. Competitors will be judged by various celebrities and an expert judge.

“We’re excited to be part ofCocktail Warsand team up again for something this fun,” said Bass and Fatone in a statement. “With this much talent, a little competition, a lot of cocktails and just enough chaos to keep things interesting — that’s usually where we thrive.”

As for "It's Gonna Be May,"Fatone and Bass have previously opened up about the song's unique legacy.

"I mean, it is crazy. If you want to stay relevant, become a meme for the young kids out there," Bass told PEOPLE in 2025. "It's something that fans get to have fun with every single year. It keeps the song kind of in people's minds, which is nice. It keeps us alive every year. It’s the most searched *NSYNC thing ever on that day just because of this stupid little meme, which I’m sure Justin loved. But yeah, it's a gift that keeps on giving."

"There are so many different ones out there," Fatone added. "And I think, again, like Lance was saying, people just get creative. The more the years go on, the more variations you see — including old-school stuff they’re digging up — and then they put the words under the meme. It’s hilarious. I think it’s great. Again, why not? Why not run with it? It’s fun."
