“Matlock” season 2 ending explained: Are we done with Wellbrexa yet?

Matlock, CBS' reimagining of the iconic '80s legal drama, wrapped its second season on April 23 with a two-part finale that delivered some long-awaited justice.

Kathy Batesleads the cast as Madeline Kingston, a retired lawyer who adopts the moniker Matty Matlock while infiltrating a law firm, Jacobson Moore. Why? Because she believes that the law firm conspired with the drug company WellBrexa to keep dangerous opioids on the market. Her daughter, we come to learn, died from an overdose. This is Matty's way of honoring her.

Season 1 ended with the reveal that senior partner Julian (Jason Ritter) was the one who discarded a landmark study that could've helped slow the opioid epidemic. In season 2, a remorseful Julian works with Matty and Jacobson Moore attorney Olympia Lawrence (Skye P. Marshall) to help pin down the architect of the cover-up — his father, Howard "Senior" Markston (Beau Bridges).

The final episodes introduce a ticking clock: Jacobson Moore is on the cusp of a merger that, if it goes through, will free Senior of any liability.

So, does Matty deliver the smoking gun in time? And what's next for Jacobson Moore (and its lovable cast of lawyers)? We break it all down below.

Who was involved in the Wellbrexa cover-up?

Jason Ritter as Julian, Skye P. Marshall as Olympia, and Kathy Bates as Matty in season 2 of 'Matlock'Credit: Michael Yarish/CBS

Coming into the final episodes, Matty and Olympia thought they had everything needed to implicate Senior in the cover-up. They even recruited Lida (Gina Rodriguez), an agent with the Department of Justice (DOJ), to help bring him down.

But it's soon revealed that Senior, who's been pretending to have dementia, is more aware of their investigation than they realize. He's been playing them, serving up evidence that steered them in the wrong direction. Oh, and that study he had Julian steal from storage way back in 2010? Well, he returned it.

"If it's back, he can claim the whole thing was a clerical error," Julian laments as all three realize that it now looks as if no crime has been committed at all.

Now, they have just four days to rebuild the case from the ground up while scrounging up new evidence untainted by Senior's meddling. The strongest path to pinning him down is through a $350,000 hush money payment to the author of the study, which they learned was handed off during a layover in Dallas.

But in making that discovery, Matty and Olympia also find that the plan was orchestrated not just by Beau and his head of security, but alsoallof the senior partners in charge at Jacobson Moore. The rot runs deep, Olympia notes.

To prove that everyone was involved in the cover-up, they'll need security footage from the Jacobson Moore offices, which only a senior partner in charge can obtain.

How is Eva involved?

Justina Machado as Eva in season 2 of 'Matlock'Credit: Michael Yarish/CBS

Eva (Justina Machado) is Senior's ex-wife and a senior partner in charge at Jacobson Moore, though she wasn't in a leadership position at the time of the cover-up. When Olympia meets with her to share the evidence and ask for her cooperation, Eva plays along at first, but her preference for a Tom Collins with extra cherries outs her as being complicit. (A receipt from the lunch where the handoff occurred shows that one attendee ordered that very drink.)

"Now we both know that we both know," Eva says.

Eva reveals that she learned of the cover-up during the same meeting when she was promoted.

"And suddenly I understood," she says. "Howard wasn't promoting me, he was implicating me."

Sure, she could've walked away, but Eva justifies her complicity by saying that she wants to be an agent of change among leadership. She implores Olympia to stop working with the DOJ. When the merger goes through, Senior will retire and she'll "cut the old guard loose" so she and Olympia can rebuild the firm as they want to see it. No, Senior won't pay for his crimes, but he'll be "old, alone, and irrelevant," Eva says.

Do Matty and Olympia take Eva's deal?

They consider it. The case isn't coming together as they'd hoped. When they fail in their efforts to secure testimony from a previous informant. Matty suggests "laying down the sword."

"What about Ellie?" Olympia asks, bringing up Matty's late daughter. "You're doing it for her."

"You know, i think I was looking at it all wrong," Matty replies. "I think Ellie led me here to you. When we first met, I was only looking at the end of my life. And now there's just so much possibility."

Julian, however, isn't satisfied. He volunteers to wear a wire, but Matty worries about it all blowing up in their faces.

Does Julian wear a wire?

He does, but it doesn't go so well for him. As the office celebrates the merger's completion, he charges into his dad's office and says DOJ has approached him with evidence about the cover-up. He's not particularly subtle when he loudly brings up the study — "the one you told me to take."

Senior sees right through it, ripping open Julian's shirt to expose the wire. He rips it off and stomps on it, then sneeringly mocks his son for thinking he could outsmart him, all while owning up to his role in the cover-up.

Does Senior pay for his crimes?

Senior may have destroyedonewire, but that wasn't the only recording device in the room.

In a flashback, we see Julian decide to wear the wire.

"If I don't make this choice, I'm just like him," he says.

But then we also see their contingency plan, which involved Matty slipping a wire disguised as a pen into Senior's pocket while riding the elevator with him.

With his confession now recorded, Lida and her fellow agents break up the merger celebration and slap cuffs on not just Senior, but all the senior partners in charge. That includes Eva, who's quick to say she'll snitch. Julian, too, is arrested, but he says it's "worth it."

Will Matty continue using the name Matlock?

Kathy Bates as Matty on 'Matlock'Credit: Michael Yarish/CBS

Matty was initially intent on unmasking herself as part of the Wellbrexa case, which she knew would invite ample scrutiny (and even legal repercussions) into her life. But it turned out this wasn't necessary.

The question, then, became whether or not she would continue her double life — Kingston at home, Matlock at work. Her husband, Edwin (Sam Anderson), would love to be her husband again publicly. (Part of Matlock's backstory is that she's a widow.) But Matty also confesses that she likes this new version of herself.

"She smiles more, she judges less," she says of her alter ego. "She's not a bull in a china shop."

Edwin is reluctant, but eventually comes around to the idea of her continuing as Matty Matlock. She seems "lighter," he says. And maybe he can do a bit of pretending himself by playing her new boyfriend. It's very cute.

How doesMatlockseason 2 end?

Matty (Kathy Bates) and Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) plot their next move in the season 2 finale of 'Matlock'Credit: Michael Yarish/CBS

The merger has the entire firm on its toes. Who will stay? Who will go? What will the future look like? Earlier in the season, Olympia and Matty floated the idea of opening their own firm: Lawrence and Kingston (or is it Kingston and Lawrence?).

By episode's end, they seem even more determined to carve out their own path. Now, however, their new venture will be called Lawrence and Matlock (or is it Matlock and Lawrence?).

Will season 3 center around their new firm? That's still unclear, but it looks likely.

Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman has teased a"big reset"for season 3, andpreviously toldEntertainment Weeklythat the season 2 finale "really propels the third season... into a very different area again."

  • Frankel has been open about her health challenges, including POTS and a recent stage 2 liver disease diagnosis

Bethenny Frankelshared that she nearly collapsed while shopping on her Costa Rican vacation, thanking "the sweetest woman" at the store who came to her aid.

"I walk into a store and, like, pretty much faint. My blood pressure crashes," the entrepreneur, 55, shared in anInstagramvideo posted on April 24.

TheSkinnygirlfounder previously revealed that she struggles withpostural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), a condition that causes varying symptoms when you transition from lying down to standing up, such as fatigue, dizziness and a fast heart rate.

When Frankel felt faint in the Nasara shopMagic Boutique, she recalled, "This woman in the store was like, 'Please lay down,' and was, like, offering me pineapple and pulled a chair up."

At the time she filmed the video, Frankel said she's "been in the store for an hour because I can't move. She took my shoes off, and I have not been able to move from this couch because I've just been so dizzy, in another country, feeling super uncomfortable."

Dubbing the unnamed helper "the sweetest woman" in her video caption, Frankel shared a clip of the employee, explaining, "I wanna show you her because she's amazing, and her store is so nice, but she's so sweet."

At the time, Frankel said she wanted to come forward about her medical issues because “maybe this is something I'll have to deal with forever, but I just wanted to tell you because I think it's important to go get all your bloodwork done.”

“Be thorough,” she stressed, “then do the follow-ups for anything that seems like an outlier. And frankly, get your bloodwork done maybe six months and then six months later, because different stuff could come up and sometimes it's an aberration and sometimes it means something.”

“Boston Blue”: Donnie Wahlberg's Danny Is Taken Hostage During a Hospital Bomb Scare

NEED TO KNOW

  • In the Friday, April 24, episode, Danny and Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green) are tasked with saving an entire emergency room from a bomb threat

  • Boston Blue airs on CBS Fridays at 10 p.m. ET and streams the next day on Paramount+

Danny Reagan and Lena Silver just stumbled upon one of their most intense cases yet.

On the Friday, April 24, episode ofBoston Blue, Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) and Lena (Sonequa Martin-Green) found themselves in a hostage situation at a Boston hospital when a man in the emergency room threatened to bomb the building. And it took a bit of patience for the duo to save the day.

The episode, "Anatomy of a Bomb," marks the latest in theBlue Bloodsspinoff and kicked off with the partners handling some other business in the hospital, before learning that they're in danger themselves. As the duo prepares to leave the ER, they learn that a man named Greg is holding the entire facility hostage and threatening to set off a bomb if his daughter, Sophie, doesn't get her promised liver transplant.

While Lena tries to persuade Greg not to set off the explosive, he doesn't budge. A vehicle parked outside the ER explodes, right as Lena's brother Jonah Silver (Marcus Scribner) and Danny's son Sean Reagan (Mika Amonsen) walk by.

The rookie BPD cops survive the bombing, but according to Greg, it was just a warning and the "next one levels the hospital."

As it turns out, the bomber's daughter has Wilson's disease. He tells Danny and Lena that he got a call to visit the hospital and prepare Sophie for surgery, only to be told moments later that her match didn't exist and there was an "administrative" error. "I don't have a reason to live if she dies," Greg says, threatening to kill the dozens of patients — as well as Danny and Lena — if his daughter doesn't get a new liver ASAP.

As Sarah Silver (Maggie Lawson) runs command outside the ER with a SWAT team, Danny and Lena try to deescalate the situation inside with the help of a doctor on duty, Troy. Also outside of the hospital, a shady death takes place that's connected to the organ mix-up, all while Sean and Jonah discover that Greg has 50 to 60 kilograms of dynamite on him. Some of it, they learn, is tucked away in the hospital's morgue.

A bomb squad is then called in, Sophie undergoes emergency surgery and Greg sets off a timer for the bomb once his daughter flatlines. Danny and Lena then have just three minutes to convince Greg to turn off the bomb as Danny uses his experience as a dad, and as a veteran, to relate to Greg. It seems to work.

"Don't die saying you loved her," Danny says, while still facing death himself. "Live, proving it."

Things turn out relatively well for the crew when all is said and done. Lena saves the day by running to the morgue to manually turn off the bomb (with one second to spare), Greg is arrested, Sophie survives, another man behind the whole organ switch-up is taken into custody and fans get to see heart-to-heart moments between both Danny and Sean and Lena and her man, Detective Brian Rogers (Ryan Broussard). The latest brush with death brings Sean and Danny even closer.

"A father's job is to protect his kids. And honestly son, some stories, you don't want to know," Danny tells Sean of his time serving in Iraq.

"I'm not a kid anymore, I want to know about you," Sean says. "I know I might not say it enough, but I love you dad."

"I love you, too," Danny responds.

Why Was Michael Jackson's 1993 Child Sex Abuse Lawsuit Cut from the “Michael” Biopic? What We Know

Michael, starring the singer's nephew Jaafar Jackson, premiered in theaters on April 24, 2026, after several delays

People Michael Jackson testifies during his civil trial on Dec. 3, 2002, in Santa Maria, Calif. ; Jaafar Jackson as Michael Jackson in 'Michael'Credit: Jim Ruyman-Pool/Getty; Glen Wilson/Lionsgate

NEED TO KNOW

  • The biopic ends in 1988, omitting any mention of the child sex abuse allegations Michael Jackson faced in the final decades of his life

  • Director Antoine Fuqua confirmed to The New Yorker that the film originally included scenes covering allegations from 13-year-old Jordan Chandler

TheMichael Jacksonbiopic chronicles a large portion of the musician's career, but it notably leaves out some pivotal — and controversial — moments of his life.

Michael– starring the "Thriller" singer's nephewJaafar Jacksonas the titular character — premiered in theaters on April 24, 2026, over three years after the project was first announced. A previously shared logline for the movie said that the film would bring an "honest portrayal of the brilliant yet complicated" singer, whose final years before his2009 deathwere marked by a string of controversies.

Days before the movie's release, director Antoine Fuqua toldThe New YorkerthatMichaeloriginally opened with the 1993 police raid on Neverland Ranch, the singer's infamous California compound, following sex abuse allegations from 13-year-old Jordan Chandler.

"Ishot [Michael] being stripped naked, treated like an animal, a monster," Fuqua said.

But, the final cut that made it to theaters is instead one that ends in 1988, omitting any mention of the singer's troubling history.

So, why isn't Michael Jackson's 1993 child sex abuse lawsuit covered in theMichaelbiopic? Here's what to know.

What was Michael accused of in his 1993 lawsuit?

In 1993, Jackson was accused of sexually abusing 13-year-old Jordan Chandler.

According toThe New York Times, the young boy, who was not named at the time, accused the singer of molesting him repeatedly over a five-month period. The young boy alleged that Jackson frequently bathed with him, shared a bed with him and showered him with gifts and trips, as well as fondling him and performing various sex acts with him, per the outlet.

In return, the Chandler family filed a civil lawsuit against Jackson, accusing him of sexual battery, seduction, willful misconduct, intentional infliction of emotional distress, fraud and negligence in a campaign to entice the boy.

What was the result of the lawsuit?

Following the allegations, Jackson agreed to pay the Chandler family roughly $25 million to settle the lawsuit. Chandler reportedly stopped cooperating with prosecutors after the settlement, and the investigation was subsequently closed, perThe New Yorker.

The Jackson estate has repeatedly denied abuse accusations made against the late singer, who wasacquitted of separate child molestation chargesin 2005. Additional allegations against Jackson were explored in the 2019 documentaryLeaving Neverland, prompting an ongoing legal battle.

Why isn't the lawsuit included in the Michael movie?

The allegations from Chandler and the aftermath were reportedly akey "backbone" of the movie,Puckreported in January 2025.

According toVariety, the film's original script included one scene in which Jackson stared at himself in the mirror, capturing his gaze as police car lights flashed behind him, in 1993, just after the singer was accused of child molestation. Per the outlet, there was also reportedly a scene in which investigators arrived at Neverland Ranch to search for evidence in the wake of the allegations.

Notably, both scenes did not make it to the final cut because the settlement between Chandler and Jackson reportedly included an agreement that the Chandlers can never be mentioned or dramatized in a movie, perPuck.

According to the outlet, the legally binding agreement had previously been overlooked when the script had been vetted and approved.

How did the lawsuit affect theMichaelbiopic?

Shortly after reports surfaced that the biopic was disrupted by the legal issues, a source close to production told PEOPLE in January 2025 that the film was "not in total chaos," and that they had reshoots slated for that March.Varietyreported that much of the third act was devoted to the sexual abuse allegations that surfaced in 1993, leaving them to rework the biopic's finale, which now concludes in 1988.

The film ultimately had a year-long delay, as it was originally intended to premiere in theaters on April 18, 2025.

In November 2024, it was postponed by six months to Oct. 3, 2025. In May 2025, however, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said during the studio's Q4 2025 earnings call that the biopic wasunlikely to hit theaters before the end of 2025, and it later received its new premiere date of April 24, 2026. Elsewhere in the call, Lionsgate film chief Adam Fogelson confirmed that they were now considering splitting the biopic into two parts, perDeadline.

The delays and reshoots also led to financial repercussions. According toVariety, when the cast reassembled for 22 additional days in June 2025 for reshoots, it added $10 to $15 million to the budget.

The outlet also reported that the Jackson estate covered the extra costs because it was their error that made the changes needed, and as a result, they also received an equity stake in the film.

What to know if your flight is canceled amid rising jet fuel costs

Airlines worldwide havebegun cancelingflights asthe warin the Middle East strains jet fuel supplies andpushes up prices— but the disruption doesn’t end there.

Jet Fuel Travel What to Know

For travelers, it can mean having to navigate a confusing web of passenger protections that vary widely depending on where they’re flying.

And the timing is amplifying the impact.

“These pressuresare arriving at a time when summertravel demandis ramping up, with major events such as the World Cup expected to put additional strain on airports,” said Eric Napoli, chief legal officer at AirHelp, a company that helps travelers secure compensation for flight disruptions and advocates for passenger rights.

Here’s what to know if your flight is canceled.

Are these cancellations happening at the last minute?

In most cases, no. At least for now, fuel-related cuts are often being made days or weeks in advance. Lufthansa Group, for example, said this week it is cutting 20,000 short-haul flights across its network through October.

That gives you more time to adjust plans than you'd typically get with weather-related disruptions, which tend to trigger last-minute cancellations.

My flight was canceled. What should I do first?

Check your airline’s app or website immediately for rebooking options. If you're flying on a U.S. carrier, that's often the fastest and easiest way to secure a new seat, according to Tyler Hosford, security director at International SOS, a global risk management and travel security company.

Non-U.S. carriers tend to have fewer digital tools, Hosford said, so it's worth trying multiple channels, including the airline's customer service lines or airport desks.

Do I have the right to a refund or a new flight?

In most cases, yes. Airlines typically offer either a refund or a rebooking on the next available flight. The exact rules vary by country, but those are the baseline options you can expect.

In the U.S., for example, if your flight is canceled and you choose not to travel, the airline must refund you, regardless of the reason. Airlines may offer travel credits instead, but you’re entitled to a full refund for airfare and any extras you didn’t use, such as baggage fees or seat upgrades.

Are passenger rights the same everywhere?

No, and protections vary widely by region — from the Montreal Convention, which governs airline liability across more than 140 countries, to specific consumer protection laws in the U.S., Canada, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Turkey and Brazil.

Europe has some of the strongest protections, including compensation in certain cases. And they apply to any flight departing from an EU airport, regardless of the airline, as well as to passengers flying on an EU-based carrier into the EU — even if the journey starts outside Europe. The United Kingdom maintains a similar framework.

The U.S. andCanadaoffer more limited protections. Policies vary widely across Asia, and in some cases travelers may need to rely more on airline policies than formal regulations.

To get a clearer picture, experts recommend searching the name of the country you're departing from and “passenger rights” before your trip.

What protections apply?

It depends.

Airlines may citefuel shortagesor risingfuel costsas the reason for cancellations. But whether you’re entitled to compensation often comes down to if the disruption is considered within the airline’s control under local laws.

Regardless of the cause, Napoli said, airlines in the European Union, for example, still have a “duty of care,” meaning they must provide “necessary support” to travelers, including rebooking.

“While airlines areciting fuel shortagesas a reason for upcoming cancellations, travelers need to know that this does not automatically waive their rights” under EU laws, Napoli said.

How can I prepare before a trip to avoid headaches?

A few steps can make disruptions easier to manage.

Sign up for flight alerts to stay informed, and book directly with the airline when possible — it’s much easier to resolve issues with the carrier directly than through a third-party booking site.

Knowing your options ahead of time and having a backup plan can make a significant difference if plans change.

What do I need for a claim or complaint?

Documentation is critical. Save everything: boarding passes, receipts, cancellation notices and any communication from the airline.

Take screenshots of app or website updates and any communication taking place online, and jot down key details from phone calls.

Napoli also recommends asking the airline for written confirmation of a flight disruption, including the stated reason.

Should I accept the first alternative flight the airline offers?

Not necessarily.

Experts say one of the most common mistakes travelers make is taking the first option without checking alternatives. Look at other flights, routes or even nearby airports because you may find a faster or more convenient way to reach your destination.

Can I book a different flight myself?

Yes, but proceed carefully.

If the airline’s rebooking option doesn’t meet your needs — especially if your new flight isn’t for several days — you can look for alternatives and request a refund instead.

Just be aware you may need to pay any fare difference up front, and you might not be reimbursed later.

Any other tips to avoid getting stuck?

— Book flights earlier in the day so you have more rebooking options if something goes wrong.

— Set up flight alerts through tracking apps such as Flighty to get early notice of cancellations or delays. In some cases, Hosford said, notifications arrive before the airline’s.

— Consider nearby airports as backup options.

— Be kind. Airline agents may be more willing to help when interactions stay calm and respectful.

“Ultimately, the shortage is squeezing the entire system, from travelers to airlines, and is something to watch as the industry looks for any relief ahead of the summer travel season,” Napoli said.
