BUSAN, South Korea (Reuters) -U.S. President Donald Trump kicked off a meeting with China's leader Xi Jinping at a South Korean air base on Thursday optimistic about striking a trade-war truce between the world's two largest economies.

The talks in the southern port city of Busan, their first face-to-face meeting since 2019, mark the finale of Trump's whirlwind trip around Asia in which he has touted several trade breakthroughs with South Korea, Japan and Southeast Asian nations.

"We are going to have a very successful meeting, I have no doubt. But he is a very tough negotiator," Trump said as he shook hands with Xi, who showed little emotion as Trump told reporters the pair might sign a trade deal on Thursday.

As they sat down with their delegations to begin talks, Xi told Trump via a translator it was normal for the two leading economies of the world to have frictions now and then.

A few days ago, trade negotiators for both countries reached a "fundamental consensus on addressing each other's primary concerns", Xi said. "I am willing to continue working with President Trump to lay a solid foundation for China-U.S. relations," he added.

China's yuan currency rose to a near one-year high against the dollar as investors hoped for an easing of trade tensions that have rocked global business. World stock markets from Wall Street to Tokyo have hit record highs in recent days.

Trump has repeatedly talked up the prospect of reaching agreement in his meeting with Xi, taking place on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, since negotiators from both sides appeared to reach an understanding in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.

But with both countries increasingly willing to play hardball over areas of economic and geopolitical competition, many questions remain about how long any trade detente may last.

The trade war reignited this month after Beijing proposed dramatically expanding curbs on exports of rare-earth minerals vital for high-tech applications, a sector China dominates.

Trump vowed to retaliate with additional 100% tariffs on Chinese exports, and with other steps including potential curbs on exports to China made with U.S. software - moves that could have upended the global economy.

"THE G2 WILL BE CONVENING SHORTLY," Trump posted on Truth Social shortly before landing in Busan.

In a separate post, he said the U.S. would step-up testing of nuclear weapons immediately, noting China's growing arsenal. Trump declined to respond to a reporter's question on the post at Thursday's meeting.

U.S. EXPECTS BEIJING TO DELAY RARE EARTH CONTROLS

After a weekend scramble between top trade negotiators, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he expected Beijing to delay the rare earth controls for a year and revive purchases of U.S. soybeans critical to American farmers, as part of a "substantial framework" to be agreed by the leaders.

Ahead of the summit, China bought its first cargoes of U.S. soybeans in several months, Reuters reported exclusively on Wednesday.

The White House has signaled it hopes the summit will be the first of several between Trump and Xi in the coming year, including possible leader visits to each country, indicating a protracted negotiation process.

But Trump wants some quick progress, in talks being closely watched by businesses worldwide.

Trump said on Wednesday he expects to reduce U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods in exchange for Beijing's commitment to curb the flow of precursor chemicals to make fentanyl, a deadly synthetic opioid that is the leading cause of American overdose deaths.

Trump has also said he might sign a final deal with Xi on TikTok, the social media app that faces a U.S. ban unless its Chinese owners divest its U.S. operations.

Previous deals, which brought down retaliatory tariffs sharply to about 55% on the U.S. side and 10% on the Chinese side and restarted the flow of rare earth magnets from China, are due to expire on November 10.

Bessent said China had agreed to help curb the flow of fentanyl precursors, but did not say whether the U.S. had made any concessions in return.

Beijing has sought the lifting of 20% tariffs over fentanyl, an easing of export controls on sensitive U.S. technology, and a rollback of new U.S. port fees on Chinese vessels aimed at combating China's global dominance in shipbuilding, ocean freight and logistics.

Trump's meeting with Xi comes at the end of a five-day trip to Asia in which he signed pacts with Japan and Southeast Asian nations on rare earths, seeking to blunt China's stranglehold on minerals used in everything from cars to fighter jets.

Regional strategic tensions, particularly over Beijing-claimed Taiwan, a U.S. partner and high-tech powerhouse, are an ominous backdrop to the summit.

On Sunday, Chinese state media said Chinese H-6K bombers recently flew near Taiwan to practise "confrontation drills."

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Taiwan should not be concerned about the U.S.-China talks, despite some experts expressing fears that Trump might offer concessions over the island. Washington is required under U.S. law to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself.

Man may have killed his 4 children over several months, North Carolina sheriff says

A North Carolina man who allegedly confessed to killing four of his children earlier this week appeared to have spread the murders over a period of several months, authorities said on Oct. 29.

Wellington Delano Dickens III, 38, was charged with four counts of murder on Oct. 28 and was being held without bond, according to court records obtained by USA TODAY and the Johnston County Sheriff's Office. The sheriff's office said Dickens had called 911 on the night of Oct. 27 and admitted to killing children.

Deputies responded to a residence in Zebulon, a rural town about 25 miles east of Raleigh, and encountered Dickens, who told them that his 3-year-old son was inside the house and that four of his other children were dead inside the trunk of a vehicle in his garage, the sheriff's office said in a statement.

North Carolina authorities: Father confessed to killing his 4 children found in car trunk

Deputies found the 3-year-old boy alive and unharmed in the residence, according to the sheriff's office. Investigators believe Dickens killed three of his biological children — ages 6, 9, and 10 — as well as his 18-year-old stepchild, the sheriff's office said.

The arrest warrants filed against Dickens indicated that the four children were killed on May 1. But during a news conference on Oct. 29, Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell said investigators now believe that the children had died in separate incidents over several months.

Bizzell said no motive has been identified, "but as the sheriff, as a father and as a grandfather, I can stand here and say there's no reason for a father to murder his children." The sheriff noted that the investigation remains ongoing and additional charges may be filed in the case.

Online court records show that Dickens appeared in court on Oct. 28 and Oct. 29 for hearings on the murder counts. His next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 13, according to court records.

Sheriff: Investigators believe children died between May and September

Bizzell said at the news conference that authorities received a 911 call at around 10:09 p.m. local time Oct. 27 from Dickens, who stated that he had killed four of his children.

Dickens "pretty much called and said, 'I'm here with my little 3-year-old son. I killed my four children. Their bodies were in the trunk of the car. I'll be glad to go outside and wait for deputies. I'm not armed. I'm just ready to do what's right,'" according to Bizzell.

When deputies arrived at the residence, Sheriff's Capt. Don Pate said they smelled an odor that was "obvious of decay." Pate added that the home was not well-kept, and there was evidence that someone had attempted to clean up the crime scene.

After responding deputies located Dickens and his 3-year-old son, Bizzell said a preliminary investigation revealed that the human remains found in the vehicle's trunk had been there "for some time." The department of social services also respond to the scene and took the 3-year-old boy for medical evaluation, according to Bizzell.

Investigators then obtained a search warrant and determined that Leah Dickens, 6, was the first child to be killed in May of this year, the sheriff said. Bizzell identified the other children as Zoe Dickens, 9, who died in August; Wellington Dickens, 10, who died in late August or early September; and Sean Brasfield, 18, who was killed in September.

The North Carolina Bureau of Investigation and the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are assisting the Johnston County Sheriff's Office in the investigation. Bizzell added that the state medical examiner's office was conducting autopsies to determine how the children died.

Children were in 'conditions that are unimaginable'

Investigators canvased the Dickens' neighborhood on Oct. 28 and interviewed neighbors, according to Bizzell. Investigators learned that the children had been homeschooled.

"It appeared there wasn't a lot of activity at the house," the sheriff said. "I guess the father and the kids were living in the house, and they're in conditions that are unimaginable."

Pate said he believed the family was "very secluded" and Dickens' extended family was not allowed to visit the children.

"They just stayed inside," according to Pate. "The neighbors said they never saw them come outside, and they were homeschooled, so they were just confined to the house."

Court records for the estate of Dickens' wife, Stephanie Rae Jones Dickens, show that she died in April 2024, and the couple's five children continued to live in their Zebulon residence. Jones Dickens had "passed away suddenly at her home," according to her obituary.

Bizzell confirmed on Oct. 29 that deputies had responded to the couple's home on April 21, 2024, to assist emergency medical services after Jones Dickens was found dead by her husband. At the time of the incident, Jones Dickens was three months pregnant and had "experienced excessive bleeding the night prior but refused to go for medical treatment," Bizzell said.

Investigators later determined that Jones Dickens died of complications from a miscarriage, and doctors ruled her death as natural, according to the sheriff. Dickens' wife died just over a year following his father's death after his vehicle struck a box truck in Lee County, North Carolina, court records show.

Dickens' great uncle Charles Moore told WRAL-TV on Oct. 28 that Dickens was an Iraq War veteran and that he last saw Dickens about a year ago. Moore said Dickens "seemed fine" at the time, the television station reported.

President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened to begin testing US nuclear weapons in response to actions by rival countries, an announcement that came moments before his meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Trump in a post on social media said, "The United States has more Nuclear Weapons than any other country," naming Russia as second and China "a distant third, but will be even within 5 years."

"Because of other countries testing programs, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our Nuclear Weapons on an equal basis. That process will begin immediately," Trump said on the final leg of his trip to Asia.

CNN has reached out to the White House and Department of Defense for comment.

The remark signals what could be a major shift in US policy, which "has observed a voluntary moratorium on nuclear explosive testing since 1992," according to the Library of Congress.

During his first term, the Trump administration said it wouldn't carry out a nuclear weapons test "at this time."

None of the three major nuclear powers – Russia, the United States and China – has tested a nuclear weapon since China in 1996. Russia's last nuclear test was in 1990, and the US last exploded a nuclear device in 1992.

North Korea conducted the world's last nuclear test in 2017.

But the world's nuclear powers continue to develop and test the systems to deliver nuclear warheads.

Trump's announcement came after Russian President Vladimir Putin said his country has successfully tested its nuclear-powered Burevestnik cruise missile.

North Korea said after testing cruise missiles earlier this week that it is taking steps to toughen its "nuclear combat posture."

Meanwhile, the US Navy in September conducted four tests of its nuclear-capable Trident missiles.

China has constructed at least three complexes for launching ballistic missiles in recent years, and it test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) into the Pacific Ocean in 2024.

CNN reported in 2023 that the US, Russia and China had all built new facilities and dug new tunnels at their nuclear test sites in recent years, according to satellite imagery.

"There are really a lot of hints that we're seeing that suggest Russia, China and the United States might resume nuclear testing," Jeffrey Lewis, a professor at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, told CNN at the time.

CNN's Kylie Atwood contributed to this report.

(Reuters) -Microsoft said late on Wednesday it had resolved an outage of its Azure cloud platform that had impacted the tech giant's suite of productivity software, and a range of industries worldwide.

"While error rates and latency are back to pre-incident levels, a small number of customers may still be seeing issues, and we are still working to mitigate this long tail," Microsoft Azure said, adding that the incident lasted for over 8 hours.

Alaska Airlines earlier in the day said it experienced a disruption to key systems, including its website, due to the Azure outage and was bringing systems back online once Microsoft resolved the issue.

The website of London's Heathrow Airport was back online after issues had affected it earlier in the day. Vodafone had also been impacted due to the outage.

Affected services include Azure Communication Services and Media Services, among others.

The Microsoft outage follows last week's disruption at Amazon AWS, which caused global turmoil among thousands of websites and some of the most popular apps, such as Snapchat and Reddit.

Microsoft 365 had said that its services experienced a downstream impact related to the Azure outage, before confirming late in the day that the impact from the Azure configuration change had been resolved.

Beginning at about 12 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Azure said its customers and Microsoft services that leverage Azure Front Door, a global cloud-based content and application delivery network, had experienced issues resulting in timeouts and errors.

The number of users reporting issues with Azure had dropped to 230, as of 6:49 p.m. ET, from a peak of over 18,000 earlier in the day, according to Downdetector, which tracks outages by collating status reports from a number of sources.

The outage at Microsoft 365 had eased to 77 users reporting issues, as of 10:44 p.m. ET, down from a peak of nearly 20,000, Downdetector's website showed. Its numbers are based on user-submitted reports, and the actual number of affected users may vary.

The AWS outage was the largest internet disruption since last year's CrowdStrike malfunction hobbled technology systems in hospitals, banks, and airports, highlighting the vulnerability of the world's interconnected technologies.

BUSAN, South Korea (AP) — President Donald Trump appeared to suggest the U.S. will resume testing nuclear weapons for the first time in three decades, saying it would be on an "equal basis" with Russia and China.

There was no indication that the U.S. would start detonating warheads, but the president offered few details about what seemed to be a significant shift in U.S. policy.

He made the announcement on social media minutes before he met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Thursday in South Korea.

The U.S. military already regularly tests its missiles that are capable of delivering a nuclear warhead, but it has not detonated the weapons since 1992 because of a test ban.

But the president suggested that changes were necessary because other countries were testing weapons. It was unclear what he was referring to, but it evoked Cold War-era escalations.

"Because of other countries testing programs, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our Nuclear Weapons on an equal basis," he said in a post on Truth Social. "That process will begin immediately."

The White House did not immediately respond to questions seeking more details, and Trump ignored a question from a reporter about his post as he sat face-to-face with Xi in Busan, a meeting that was expected to focus on trade issues between the two countries.

Pentagon officials didn't immediately respond to questions about the announcement from Trump on the nuclear missile tests.

Russian President Vladimir Putin this week announced that Russia tested a new atomic-powered and nuclear-capable underwater drone and a new nuclear-powered cruise missile. Putin did not announce any tests of Russia's nuclear weapons, however, which last occurred in 1990.

Trump did not specifically mention the Russian tests in his post, but alluded to the nuclear stockpiles controlled by both Xi and Putin, saying, "Russia is second, and China is a distant third, but will be even within 5 years."

Putin in 2023 signed a bill revoking Russia's ratification of a global nuclear test ban, which Moscow said was needed to put Russia on par with the U.S.

The Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, which was adopted in 1996 and bans all nuclear explosions anywhere in the world, was signed by President Bill Clinton but never ratified by the Senate.

Russia in 2023 said it would only resume tests of its nuclear weapons if Washington did it first.

The second day of a civil trial involving a former Virginia elementary school teacher who was shot in her classroom by a 6-year-old student saw emotional testimony Wednesday from her sister along with descriptions of the injuries.

Abby Zwerner, who taught first grade at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, is suing a former assistant principal for $40 million, saying she ignored multiple warnings the boy had a gun in the hours before the January 2023 shooting. Zwerner was shot in the hand and chest as she sat at a reading table.

Here are the key developments from Day 2 of the trial, which is set to continue Thursday.

The chief of surgery where Zwerner was hospitalized testified her injuries were life-threatening. Her lung collapsed and the bullet that remains inside Zwerner's body just missed her heart, Daniel Munn said. An orthopedic trauma surgeon testified about the details of Zwerner's devastating hand injury, her multiple surgeries and ongoing recovery.

A now-retired corporal from the Newport News Sheriff's Department testified about his response to the scene after the shooting. "We were quite taken aback. We didn't expect to see so young a suspect," the corporal testified.

Zwerner's lawyers also introduced body camera footage and police scene photographs into evidence.

Zwerner's twin sister, Hannah, testified how her sister's demeanor changed after the shooting: She was full of light, outgoing and silly, but now "she's just not the person that she was," Hannah said during her emotional testimony.

The lawsuit accuses former school administrator Ebony Parker of failing to act after four people went to her with concerns the student brought a gun to school.

Zwerner's attorney, Diane Toscano, said in opening statements Parker made "bad decisions and choices that day."

Parker had the authority but failed to search the student, remove him from the classroom and call law enforcement, Toscano added.

The shooting occurred on the first day after the student had returned from a suspension for slamming Zwerner's phone two days earlier, Toscano said. It sent shock waves through the community and the country, with many wondering how a child so young could get access to a gun and shoot his teacher.

Zwerner spent nearly two weeks in the hospital, required six surgeries and does not have the full use of her left hand.

Former school administrator Ebony Parker appears in court on October 28. - Pool/Court TV

"No one could have imagined that a 6-year old, first-grade student would bring a firearm into a school," Parker's attorney, Daniel Hogan, told jurors. "You will be able to judge for yourself whether or not this was foreseeable. That's the heart of this case."

Hogan said that decision-making in a public school setting is "cooperative" and "collaborative." He also warned of hindsight bias and "Monday-morning quarterbacking."

"The law knows that it is fundamentally unfair to judge another person's decisions based on stuff that came up after the fact," Hogan said. "The law requires you to examine people's decisions at the time they make them."

Parker is the only defendant in the lawsuit. A judge previously dismissed the district's superintendent and the school principal.

Parker faces a separate criminal trial next month on eight counts of felony child neglect — one for "each of the eight bullets that endangered all the students" in Zwerner's classroom, prosecutors said.

Criminal charges against school officials following a school shooting are quite rare, experts say. Each of the counts is punishable by up to five years in prison upon a conviction.

The student's mother was sentenced to a total of nearly four years in prison for felony child neglect and federal weapons charges.

Hurricane Melissa left a trail of destruction as it moved across Jamaica, seen for the first time from space in new satellite images obtained from Vantor.

The storm made landfall in Jamaica on Tuesday as a monstrous Category 5 hurricane before moving onto to Cuba on Wednesday and later, the Bahamas.

These aerial images show widespread flooding and extensive damage in towns along Jamaica's southwest coast in the parish of St. Elizabeth and, on the opposite side of the island in Montego Bay, the capital of St. James parish. The storm first made landfall on Jamaica's southwest coast near the town of Black River, seen in part here.

Damage to homes, businesses and community centers in Black River is extensive – even seen in this limited scope. This satellite photo taken after the storm shows the roof of one of the largest markets in the neighborhood ripped cleanly off its foundation.

Coastal communities were hit hardest by the storm's devastating winds, with some remote fishing villages nearly flattened by the hurricane. In the town of White House, less than 10 miles northwest of Black River, small boats were washed ashore in a town where the economy is reliant on its closeness to the Caribbean Sea.

As the storm progressed north, it drenched rural farmlands across St. Elizabeth Parish, a southwestern region that's become Jamaica's breadbasket. Footage captured on the ground showed just how quickly the low-lying farmlands were submerged by rainwater.

An image captured less than 24 hours after the floodwaters rushed in shows inundated farmlands and vegetation stripped from large swathes of agricultural land.

On the opposite coast, Hurricane Melissa swept through Montego Bay, in Jamaica's north. This satellite image captured in its aftermath shows extensive flooding throughout the city and large pools of water around storage facilities at the city's main port.

As the storm moved out to sea, it pulled debris and muddy water through the Barnett and Pye Rivers, seen at the center of the frame. The debris appears as a large cloud of dirty water seen beyond the shoals off Montego Bay.

Purported Hollywood producer David Brian Pearce has been hit with a lengthy sentence after being convicted of multiple sexual assaults and the fentanyl-induced murders of two women.

Pearce, 43, was sentenced to 146 years to life in state prison Wednesday, a representative for the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office confirmed to **.

In February, Pearce was convicted of fatally drugging model Christy Giles and her friend Hilda Marcela Cabrales-Arzola with fentanyl after a party in November 2021. He was also convicted on seven rape charges perpetrated against seven different victims, all of whom testified at his trial.**

"This sentence delivers long-awaited justice for Ms. Cabrales-Arzola, Ms. Giles, and the courageous sexual assault victims who came forward and testified," District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said in a statement. "Not only were the victims sexually assaulted, but the lives of Ms. Cabrales-Arzola and Ms. Giles were stolen in one of the most [devastating] ways — a fentanyl-induced sexual assault by Pearce."

Hochman continued, "This case is a stark reminder of the devastation caused by fentanyl. Fentanyl poisoners who harm and exploit others will be held accountable. Every prosecution and sentence like this one moves us a step closer to deterring criminals from committing these crimes and protecting others from a similar fate."

An attorney for Pearce, Ronda Dixon, said in a statement to EW that it was "never proven" that her client supplied the two victims the drugs that killed them, and suggested that the overdoses were accidental.

"My heart goes out to their families as it is difficult to lose a loved one to a fentanyl overdose," Dixon said. "However, the message the DA sent out today is chilling to good Samaritans who seek to help someone who is an overdose victim. Certainly people will think twice before taking anyone to the hospital who they think is a victim of overdose."

Pearce was charged alongside Brandt Osborn, who was charged with two counts of accessory to murder after the fact. A jury did not reach a verdict in Osborn's case in February, and he is expected to receive a new trial in the near future. A pretrial is scheduled for Nov. 18.

LAPD Det. Jonathan Vander Lee previously told CBS News that Pearce posed as a Hollywood producer, though he didn't actually have any production credits. "He'd introduce himself as a producer, as doctor, all these different things," Lee said. "He's none of these things… He might have been an intern at the time or something at a production company."

Prosecutors said Pearce and Osborn met Giles and Cabrales-Arzola at a warehouse party in East Los Angeles around 3 a.m. on Nov. 13, 2021. The two women went back to the men's shared Beverly Hills apartment about two hours later, and Pearce allegedly gave them gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) and fentanyl that caused them to fatally overdose.

Cabrales-Arzola ordered a ride-hailing service just 35 minutes after entering the apartment, but neither of the women left until Pearce carried them out the following afternoon and dropped them off at different hospitals. Giles was dead upon arrival at the hospital, while Cabrales-Arzola was resuscitated, only to die 11 days later.**

Kid Rock's use of a slur in a recent interview was definitely noticed by the Special Olympics.

During an appearance Friday on Fox News' *Jesse Watters Primetime*, the "Bawitdaba" singer cracked up as he told the host that he planned to be "a r-----" for Halloween as he held a face mask over his mouth.

The host laughed, too, and added, "I guess you can be anything for Halloween."

But the Special Olympics did not find the on-air moment funny.

In response, Loretta Claiborne, the chief inspiration officer at the organization, which aims to "provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities," released an open letter to Kid Rock, who was born Robert James Ritchie, about the appearance.**

"The R-Word deeply demeans and harms people with intellectual disabilities," Claiborne wrote. "I'm writing to you personally with an urgent request: please acknowledge the hurt caused and use this moment to stand with us in rejecting that word and the prejudice it represents."**

She explained that he has "a powerful voice and a massive platform" and that "as an artist and cultural figure who influences millions, you can shape conversations and attitudes across this country."

People with intellectual disabilities, she continued, "have suffered generations of discrimination and humiliation. In the 21st century, we're still continuing to fight for the simplest form of justice: the recognition of our full humanity, a recognition you undermine when you use the word retard."

Claiborne noted that the "Spread the Word" campaign, which is backed by both the Special Olympics and Best Buddies, endeavors to end "the casual use of the R-word and replace it with something far more powerful **respect**. We've made great progress, but every public use of that word sets us back and reinforces the stigma we're trying to overcome."

By Nora Eckert

DETROIT (Reuters) -Workers at a Volkswagen plant in Tennessee voted to authorize a strike, the United Auto Workers union said Wednesday evening, paving the way for a potential walkout at the Chattanooga facility.

The UAW and automaker have been in contract negotiations for more than a year, after workers there voted 73% in favor of joining the union in April 2024.

The vote gives the union the right to strike, but doesn't guarantee one will happen.

"A strike would be harmful to everyone at VW Chattanooga and our community. If a strike is called, we are committed to ensuring any employees who choose to do so can come to work safely and will continue to receive their full pay and benefits," Volkswagen said in a statement.

The Chattanooga factory became the first auto plant in the South to unionize via election since the 1940s and the first foreign-owned auto plant in the South to do so. Since then, the union's $40 million organizing drive has stalled, following a defeat at a Mercedes plant in Alabama.

"It is a historic first, as the first strike authorization vote at a non-Big Three automaker in the modern era," the union said of the strike vote, in a release Wednesday.

Negotiations at the facility, which produces the electric ID.4 and gasoline-powered Atlas SUV, have centered on pay, healthcare and financial benefits such as cost-of-living adjustments (COLA).

About 3,200 workers at the plant are represented by the union, the labor group said.

After the union notched record labor deals with Detroit's automakers in late 2023, Volkswagen joined many other companies in offering their workers a wage bump of 11%. The company's proposed deal would offer an additional 20% wage increase over the four-year contract.

"Our ask is let the employees vote on that," Volkswagen Group of America CEO Kjell Gruner said at a Reuters conference in Detroit on Wednesday. "We are very confident with this offer that our employees would say 'let's do this.'"

Employees would also receive COLA for the first time, as well as a $4,000 ratification bonus, according to what the company described as its last and final offer, which was posted to the VW website.

"Volkswagen's most recent proposal does not include the job security language needed to protect workers from plant closures, outsourcing, or the sale of the Chattanooga facility," the union said in a Wednesday release.

Many workers have pushed for an equal or better deal than the one ironed out with the Detroit Three automakers in late 2023, which included a 25% wage increase over the life of the contract with Stellantis, Ford Motor and General Motors.

Megan Walerius -

Love Is Blind's "Sparkle Megan" welcomed a baby boy, she revealed in the season 9 reunion episode on Oct. 29

She also introduced the father of her son, who she met shortly after filming ended

Fans watched Megan break off her engagement to Jordan Keltner in the final episode of the Netflix hit

Megan Walerius, also known as "Sparkle" Megan, is a mom!

The reality star, 35, announced the news during the season 9 Love Is Blind reunion on Wednesday, Oct. 29, while reflecting on her previous doubts about her ability to be a stepmom to then-fiancé Jordan Keltner's 5-year-old son Luca.

"Today I actually have a little bit of a surprise," Megan began. "I am a mom now. I had a baby boy 2-and-a-half months ago."

She called the newborn, named Brooks, "my whole world," adding, "I now know more than ever I was meant on this earth to be a mom. He's amazing and our family is very happy."

Megan Walerius

Megan's partner Paul was also in attendance, supporting her from the audience. She explained that they were introduced by a friend three months after she wrapped the Netflix series, and they got pregnant three months into dating.

"We had our ups and downs," she admitted. "I'm not going to say it was perfect. But Paul has been amazing, and we're very happy."

"I'm definitely learning to be a lot more selfless," Megan went on to say. "I think that becoming a mom is the ultimate act of selflessness. It's given me a lot more empathy too for Jordan and being a single dad. I applaud Jordan for even doing this experiment and putting his heart out there. It's really special."

While all their LIB castmates were just learning the news, Jordan shared that he and Megan spoke prior to the taping.

"I had some disgusting person reach out to me on Instagram pretty much trying to stir the pot, so I just reached out to Megan," he said. "She was very transparent, which I appreciate. If I would've found out right here, right now I think that would have been jarring, so I appreciate the transparency and the honesty. You're gonna be great parents, and I have no doubt in my mind about that."

Megan noted that "it was hard" to keep her pregnancy a secret, but she was still able to enjoy it. She even had a baby shower, which she kept phone-free.

"Being cast into the limelight now, I just wanted to have my pregnancy and the start of Brooks' life for us to have in private," she said.

Megan's big announcement followed speculation that she had become a mom when paparazzi captured photos of her with a baby earlier this month. Then, in the hours leading up to the reunion airing, she took to Instagram with a cryptic message.

There's always more to the story... Who's ready for the reunion tonight?! Tune in to @netflix at 6pm PST✨

In the final episode of LIB season 9, Megan ended her relationship with Jordan, who she got engaged to in the pods, days before their wedding was supposed to take place.

"I still have reservations, and that's not how I should be feeling going into my wedding [and] our wedding," Megan told Jordan. "I'm sorry for not feeling more compassion for you and understanding and giving you what you needed in a fiancé. I just can't do this."

The former couple initially bonded over Jordan's son having the same diabetes diagnosis as Megan's late father. In a confessional, however, Megan revealed that dating Jordan had her "questioning" if she even wanted to have kids.

"I mean, maybe I'm just not cut out to be a stepmom. Honestly, this has me questioning if I'm even cut out to be a mom," she said in the episode.

"I don't know, maybe I am too caught up in my own life. All I wanted coming into this experiment was to find love and to find my partner," Megan added. "I will love Jordan always — but he's not my partner."

Jordan later claimed he had regrets about introducing Luca and Megan, who met off-camera, although he clarified at the reunion that it wasn't personal.

"I didn't mean I regretted introducing you as a person," Jordan said. "Just, at his age, stability is very important. That wasn't even you, that was me signing up to do this and bringing him into the whole experiment. It had nothing to do with Megan, she's an amazing person."

The first nine seasons of Love Is Blind are available to stream on Netflix.

Adam Brody and Leighton Meester at the 'Nobody Wants This' season 2 premiere in 2025Key Points -

EW has an exclusive preview of Leighton Meester on The World's First Podcast With Erin & Sara Foster.

The Gossip Girl alum says she forgets Adam Brody is her husband while watching his work.

Meester joins Brody and Kristen Bell on season 2 of Netflix's Nobody Wants This.

Adam who?

Leighton Meester may have been married to her Nobody Wants This costar Adam Brody for more than a decade, but the years just slip away when she watches him act.

"When I watch him in anything he does, I really do forget it's him. And then I'll look over and be like, 'Oh right, that's my husband,'" Meester tells hosts Erin and Sara Foster on Thursday's episode of Dear Media's World's First Podcast, which Entertainment Weekly is exclusively previewing.

"When I was watching this season, I was so invested in their relationship I had to look away so I wouldn't cry before work," she shares with the sisters, both executive producers on the hit Netflix romantic dramedy series.

Erin, who created the Emmy-nominated series, asks Meester if Brody's character, the kind-hearted rabbi Noah Roklov, "resonates so much because he's such a real man?"

The Gossip Girl alum assents, calling Noah "a fully realized man who isn't pandering to women. He's straightforward, not fearful of a woman's power, and I think that's why people love him. He's not a superhero - he's a mensch. He's attracted to strong women, not intimidated by them."

Nobody Wants This proved to be a hit for Netflix when it premiered last September. The series follows the slow and halting coming together of Noah, reeling from a broken relationship, and Joanne (Kristen Bell), an agnostic podcaster with seemingly little in common with the spiritual leader.

Meester appears on a season 2 episode as Abby, a childhood pal whom Joanne still resents for cutting the hair of her American Girl Doll. Now a mommy influencer on Instagram, Abby and her husband call upon Noah to oversee a baby naming ceremony, which a vengeful Joanne also attends.

When asked if she gets nervous acting alongside Brody, Meester says it's the opposite. "I feel so at ease and so comforted and relaxed and I feel like he's encouraging me unconsciously and then I feel him thinking good things," she shares.

"I just felt very comforted," Meester says of her time on the Nobody Wants This set. "Adam too, he does come home and really have nice things to say about everybody and...feels very at home and safe there, too."

Bell previously sung Meester's praises for her work on the episode, telling EW, "I know Leighton's extremely talented, but I did not anticipate what a comedic sniper she was gonna be. She is effervescent in that episode."

The Veronica Mars and The Good Place star called the new season "so incestuous," noting that Meester's on-screen husband is played by Joe Gilette, the real-life partner of Jackie Tohn, who plays Noah's sister-in-law.

Meester and Brody first worked together on the 2011 film The Oranges, but met before that through a mutual colleague. Brody explained on a 2021 episode of Anna Faris' Unqualified podcast that producer Josh Schwartz brought the cast of two of his shows together at Canter's Deli in Los Angeles, just as The O.C. (Brody's show) was ending and Gossip Girl (Meester's) was beginning.

"He introduced all of us and then [I] bumped into her, like, two or three times over the next couple of years," Brody explained. The couple married in 2014, welcoming their first child in 2015 and their second child in 2020.

Check out Meester's full episode of The World's First Podcast With Erin & Sara Foster — on which she also opens up about navigating fame, getting older in Hollywood, and her early career on Gossip Girl — when it drops on Thursday. Watch an exclusive preview above.

After several years in development, Warner Bros. Animation and New Line Cinema are finally moving ahead with the "Hello Kitty" feature film, dating it for July 21, 2028.

"Hello Hollywood 🎀🌴🎬 #HelloKittyMovie is coming to theaters July 21, 2028!," said an Instagram post from the studio on Wednesday.

'Hello Kitty' Movie in the Works

"The film marks Hello Kitty's Hollywood theatrical debut as Hello Kitty and her friends embark on a cinematic adventure sure to delight audiences of all ages," the studio said in a statement.

Leo Matsuda is directing, while Dana Fox ("Wicked") wrote the most recent draft of the script. Matsuda directed the short "Inner Workings" and worked as a story artist on films including "Zootopia" and "Wreck-It Ralph."

Japan's Sanrio first introduced the adorable big-headed feline in 1974 and quickly unleashed a merchandising juggernaut, with entire stores devoted to thousands of items branded with Hello Kitty and her friends, such as Dear Daniel and superhero alter ego Ichigoman. There's a Hello Kitty theme park in Japan, Hello Kitty cafés, dozens of video games and numerous collaborations for high-end clothing and other adult-targeted products.

The English-language feature project was first announced by New Line in 2019, and was the first time Sanrio had licensed film rights to the classic cat. It's not yet known whether Kitty White (yes, she has a last name) will speak in the film, but lacking a mouth, she has been completely silent to date in several animated series about her adventures. Sanrio also licensed rights to other characters, including the cracked egg character Gudetama, the rabbit character My Melody, and Little Twin Stars, so it wouldn't be surprising to see them play in the same sandbox as Hello Kitty.

Matsuda is repped by Verve and manager Stacey Lubliner's SEL media company.

(Reuters) -Universal Music Group said on Wednesday it has settled a copyright infringement case with artificial intelligence company Udio and that the two firms will collaborate on a new suite of creative products.

Under the agreement, the companies will launch a platform next year that leverages generative AI trained on authorized and licensed music.

In 2024, major record labels Sony Music, Universal Music Group and Warner Records had sued Udio and another AI firm called Suno, accusing them of committing mass copyright infringement by using the labels' recordings to train music-generating AI systems.

The labels alleged that the AI companies hundreds of songs from some of the world's most popular musicians to teach their systems to create music that will "directly compete with, cheapen, and ultimately drown out" human artists.

At the time, Suno and Udio argued that using copyrighted sound recordings to train their systems qualified as fair use under U.S. copyright law and described the lawsuits as attempts to stifle independent competition.

Earlier this month, a federal judge in Manhattan dismissed rapper Drake's defamation lawsuit over Kendrick Lamar's diss track "Not Like Us" against UMG, which releases both artists' music. Lamar and Drake had been engaged in a long-running feud with several high-profile diss tracks against each other.

UMG is the world's biggest music label, and its catalogue of artists also includes Taylor Swift, BTS, Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter and Lady Gaga.

Jake Paul is a little more than two weeks away from entering the ring to face WBA lightweight champion Gervonta "Tank" Davis on Friday, November 14, at Miami's Kaseya Center.

This will be Paul's second fight of the year, following his unanimous decision victory over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in June. Paul has a record of 12 wins and one loss, including seven knockouts. Davis will also enter the ring for the second time this year and boasts an undefeated record of 30 wins and one draw. The match against Paul comes as a surprise, as Davis was previously expected to have a rematch with Lamont Roach Jr., who is the only opponent to have drawn with Davis in his career.

Here is how to watch the Paul vs. Davis boxing event.
