Frank Grillo on Aug. 13, 2025 -

Frank Grillo, who stars as Brock Rumlow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Rick Flag Sr. in the DC Universe, told PEOPLE which franchise matched his preferred work style

Grillo, 60, also discussed the differences between the two franchise, saying with DC, "the scripts are in front of you," while with Marvel things are done a little more on the "fly"

The actor also discussed going toe-to-toe with John Cena's Peacemaker and Chris Evans' Captain America

Frank Grillo is explaining how collaborating with DC feels worlds apart from his time working with Marvel.

The 60-year-old actor, who stars as Rick Flag Sr. in the DC Universe (DCU) and Brock Rumlow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) recently told PEOPLE in an exclusive conversation that there are several key differences between the two studios both on-screen and behind the scenes.

"It's different. It's not organized in the same way. [DC] is really like all the scripts are in front of you and you kind of have a real secure handle on what's happening," Grillo says at the Peacemaker Season 2 premiere.

"And there's nothing wrong with it, but [Marvel] was a little fly by the seat of your pants," he adds, referring to Marvel, at the Aug. 13 event.

He noted that Marvel was "done very well," but it can be daunting for some actors who don't know what is in store for their characters in the script.

"For me, it's a little scary to do it that way," Grillo admits.

However, there are some similarities between the two characters he plays as both Brock Rumlow and Rick Flag Sr. are soldiers who are fighting for what they believe in.

In the MCU's Captain America: The Winter Soldier from 2014, Grillo has an intense fight scene with Chris Evans' Captain America. He also goes toe-to-toe with John Cena's Peacemaker in the second season of the DCU show.

When it comes to which was the better fight, Grillo knows his answer.

"I had no problem beating the crap out of either one of them," he said, jokingly, despite his character losing the fight to Captain America. "I mean … I don't know. They were both easy pickings."

Grillo is not the only one who stars in movies for both universes, as Michael Rooker and Sean Gunn, who starred in Guardians of the Galaxy as Yondu and Kraglin, also are in the DCU, following in the footsteps of the film's director James Gunn.

James, 59, also recently weighed in on Marvel vs. DC, saying that the key distinction between the two lies in how their universes are built.

In a recent chat with Interview Magazine, the filmmaker explained that while Marvel often ties its heroes together under one overarching narrative, his approach at DC is about exploring different heroes and worlds told through standalone stories.

"People say, 'Oh, the DCU is doing what MCU is.' But I think it really is a lot more to me what the Game of Thrones world is like or what Star Wars is like, because we're building a universe and then picking out little pieces of it and telling individual stories from that universe," James said.

"There is not a New York City in our DCU. There is not a Los Angeles in our DCU," he continued, describing the differences. "There is Metropolis, Evergreen and Coast City. It's a different map. It's a world in which some form of superheroes, which we call Metahumans, have existed for at least 300 years and they've been a part of our life."

Peacemaker's season 2 is streaming on HBO Max.

According to the Mayo Clinic, perimenopause is "the time before menopause when your body is getting ready to stop having periods."

Symptoms can include irregular periods, hot flashes, sleep problems and mood changes. Some women may experience symptoms as early as their 30s or as late as their 50s.

"The menopause before the menopause," Shepherd continued during the episode. "If what I'm going through right now is perimenopause, what the hell is the real menopause? You tell me ... what is a peri hot flash?"

Charlie Woods added another hole-in-one to his young resume, this time doing so at the Junior Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Woods, the 16-year-old son of golf legend Tiger Woods, stepped up to his tee shot on the par-3 third hole, and he hit a pure shot as it drew into the green 177 yards away.

Woods watched as the ball landed on the green, and it drained, leading to a celebration on the tee box with his playing partners.

Woods ended up carding a 72, which was even-par, on Sunday. He finished 7-over for the tournament, which had him well outside the top of the leaderboard.

This wasn't the first hole-in-one of Woods' career, as he hit one while playing alongside his father at the PNC Championship in December 2024, with his father ecstatic when he saw the ball fall into the hole.

Tiger had 20 hole-in-ones during his legendary career, though only three occurred during official PGA Tour events.

He may not have won this tournament, but Woods added some hardware to his trophy case earlier this year with the Team TaylorMade Invitational win at Streamsong Resort Black Course in Bowling Green, Florida. It was his first American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) victory of his young career.

Woods has more wins on his resume, as he won the 14-15-year-old category at the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour's Major Championship in June 2023. He also won the Last Chance Regional golf tournament later that year.

Woods qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur last summer, but he failed to make the cut there.

Of course, the expectations are going to be astronomical for Woods due to his father's accomplishments, but the talent is certainly there to go the distance as a professional.

Charlie Woods hits his tee shot on the first hole during the final round of the 2025 Junior PGA Championship at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex on Friday, August 1, 2025 in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Tiger has 82 professional wins under his belt, including the career Grand Slam with wins at the Masters, U.S. Open, Open Championship and PGA Championship. Those 82 wins are tied with Sam Snead for the most ever.

It's tomato season and Lidia is harvesting on farms in California's Central Valley.

She is also anxious. Attention from U.S. Immigration Control and Enforcement could upend her life more than 23 years after she illegally crossed the U.S.-Mexico border as a teenager.

"The worry is they'll pull you over when you're driving and ask for your papers," said Lidia, who spoke to The on condition that only her first name be used because of her fears of deportation. "We need to work. We need to feed our families and pay our rent."

As parades and other events celebrating the contributions of workers in the U.S. are held Monday for the Labor Day holiday, experts say President Donald Trump's stepped-up immigration policies are impacting the nation's labor force.

More than 1.2 million immigrants disappeared from the labor force from January through the end of July, according to preliminary Census Bureau data analyzed by the Pew Research Center. That includes people who are in the country illegally as well as legal residents.

Immigrants make up almost 20% of the U.S. workforce and that data shows 45% of workers in farming, fishing and forestry are immigrants, according to Pew senior researcher Stephanie Kramer. About 30% of all construction workers are immigrants and 24% of service workers are immigrants, she added.

The loss in immigrant workers comes as the nation is seeing the first decline in the overall immigrant population after the number of people in the U.S. illegally reached an all-time high of 14 million in 2023.

"It's unclear how much of the decline we've seen since January is due to voluntary departures to pursue other opportunities or avoid deportation, removals, underreporting or other technical issues," Kramer said. "However, we don't believe that the preliminary numbers indicating net-negative migration are so far off that the decline isn't real."

Trump campaigned on a promise to deport millions of immigrants working in the U.S. illegally. He has said he is focusing deportation efforts on "dangerous criminals," but most people detained by ICE have no criminal convictions. At the same time, the number of illegal border crossings has plunged under his policies.

Pia Orrenius, a labor economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, said immigrants normally contribute at least 50% of job growth in the U.S.

"The influx across the border from what we can tell is essentially stopped, and that's where we were getting millions and millions of migrants over the last four years," she said. "That has had a huge impact on the ability to create jobs."

'Crops did go to waste'

Just across the border from Mexico in McAllen, Texas, corn and cotton fields are about ready for harvesting. Elizabeth Rodriguez worries there won't be enough workers available for the gins and other machinery once the fields are cleared.

Immigration enforcement actions at farms, businesses and construction sites brought everything to a standstill, said Rodriguez, director of farmworker advocacy for the National Farmworker Ministry.

"In May, during the peak of our watermelon and cantaloupe season, it delayed it. A lot of crops did go to waste," she said.

In Ventura County, California, northwest of Los Angeles, Lisa Tate manages her family business that grows citrus fruits, avocados and coffee on eight ranches and 800 acres (323 hectares).

Most of the men and women who work their farms are contractor-provided day laborers. There were days earlier this year when crews would be smaller. Tate is hesitant to place that blame on immigration policies. But the fear of ICE raids spread quickly.

Dozens of area farmworkers were arrested late this spring.

"People were being taken out of laundromats, off the side of the road," Tate said.

Lidia, the farmworker who spoke to the AP through an interpreter, said her biggest fear is being sent back to Mexico. Now 36, she is married with three school-age children who were born here.

"I don't know if I'll be able to bring my kids," said Lidia. "I'm also very concerned I'd have to start from zero. My whole life has been in the United States."

From construction to health care

Construction sites in and around McAllen also "are completely dead," Rodriguez said.

"We have a large labor force that is undocumented," she said. "We've seen ICE particularly targeting construction sites and attempting to target mechanic and repair shops."

The number of construction jobs are down in about half of U.S. metropolitan areas, according to an Associated General Contractors of America analysis of government employment data. The largest loss of 7,200 jobs was in the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, California, area. The Los Angeles-Long Beach-Glendale area lost 6,200 jobs.

"Construction employment has stalled or retreated in many areas for a variety of reasons," said Ken Simonson, the association's chief economist. "But contractors report they would hire more people if only they could find more qualified and willing workers and tougher immigration enforcement wasn't disrupting labor supplies."

Kramer, with Pew, also warns about the potential impact on health care. She says immigrants make up about 43% of home health care aides.

The Service Employees International Union represents about 2 million workers in health care, the public sector and property services. An estimated half of long-term care workers who are members of SEIU 2015 in California are immigrants, said Arnulfo De La Cruz, the local's president.

"What's going to happen when millions of Americans can no longer find a home care provider?" De La Cruz said. "What happens when immigrants aren't in the field to pick our crops? Who's going to staff our hospitals and nursing homes?"

A man found dead in a pool of blood is being investigated as a homicide at the annual Burning Man art and music festival in the northwestern Nevada desert, authorities say.

Authorities were alerted about the man Saturday at the gathering in the Black Rock Desert about 110 miles north of Reno.

Deputies along with rangers from the Bureau of Land Management responded and "found a single white adult male lying on the ground, obviously deceased," the Pershing County Sheriff's Office said in a statement Sunday.

The investigation has included interviewing several participants and cordoning off a perimeter in the area where the body was found in the makeshift encampment called Black Rock City. The identity of the dead male was not immediately known, the sheriff's office said. No other information was released.

The body was taken to a medical examiner's office.

The Pershing County Sheriff's Office said it appears to be a singular crime but urged everyone at the festival to be vigilant of their surroundings and acquaintances. The festival ends on Monday.

Burning Man officials said in a statement that they are cooperating with law enforcement and asked participants in Black Rock City to not interfere with their investigation.

"The safety and well-being of our community are paramount," the statement said. It noted that support services, including a crisis support team, are available and participants have access to free Wi-Fi If they need to communicate with loved ones.

The annual gathering in the Black Rock Desert attracts tens of thousands of artists, musicians and activists each year for a mix of wilderness camping and avant-garde performances, highlighted by the burning of a large wooden effigy of a man.

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City's West Indian American Day Parade, one of the world's largest celebrations of Caribbean culture, is set to step off Monday with increased security after a fatal shooting at last year's event.

The police department is sending thousands of officers plus helicopters and drones and using barricades to create a "moat" between marchers and the many spectators lining the nearly 2-mile (3.2-kilometer) Brooklyn parade route, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.

It will be the department's largest deployment of the year, Tisch said, with more officers assigned to safeguard the event than New Year's Eve in Times Square or the July Fourth fireworks on the East River.

"We are not going to allow one or two individuals to spoil the festivities," Mayor Eric Adams said at a Friday press briefing, noting that there were no specific or credible threats against the parade.

The annual Labor Day event fills Eastern Parkway from Crown Heights to the Brooklyn Museum with vibrant costumes, colorful flags, and the sounds of soca and reggae music.

Along with crowds of hundreds of thousands of people, it's also a magnet for local politicians, many of whom have West Indian heritage or represent members of the city's large Caribbean community.

Last year, one person was killed and four others were wounded in the shooting along the parade route. Tisch said Friday that, a year later, police were still looking for the shooter.

The parade is the culmination of days of carnival events in the city, which includes steel pan band performances and J'Ouvert, a separate street party earlier in the day that commemorates freedom from slavery.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — A strong earthquake in eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border has killed at least 250 people and injured at least 500 others, officials said.

The quake late Sunday hit a series of towns in the province of Kunar, near the city of Jalalabad in neighboring Nangahar province. The 6.0 magnitude at 11:47 p.m. was centered 27 kilometers (17 miles) east-northeast of the city of Jalalabad in Nangarhar province, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It was just 8 kilometers (5 miles) deep. Shallower quakes tend to cause more damage.

The Kunar Disaster Management Authority said in a statement that at least 250 people were killed and 500 others injured in the districts of Nur Gul, Soki, Watpur, Manogi and Chapadare.

Jalalabad is a bustling trade city due to its proximity with neighboring Pakistan and a key border crossing between the countries. Although it has a population of about 300,000 according to the municipality, it's metropolitan area is thought to be far larger. Most of its buildings are low-rise constructions, mostly of concrete and brick, and its outlying areas include homes built of mud bricks and wood. Many are of poor construction.

Jalalabad also has considerable agriculture and farming, including citrus fruit and rice, with the Kabul River flowing through the city.

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck Afghanistan on Oct. 7, 2023, followed by strong aftershocks. The Taliban government estimated at least 4,000 people perished.

The U.N. gave a far lower death toll of about 1,500. It was the deadliest natural disaster to strike Afghanistan in recent memory.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — At least 250 people have been killed and over 500 have been injured in Afghanistan after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit the country, Taliban officials said Monday.

The earthquake struck 17 miles from the city of Jalalabad near the border with Pakistan around midnight local time (3:30 p.m. ET Sunday), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Because the earthquake hit a remote mountainous area, "it will take time to get the exact information about human losses and damage to the infrastructure," said Sharafat Zaman, a spokesperson for the Afghan Public Health Ministry.

"We have launched a massive rescue operation and mobilized hundreds of people to help people in the affected areas," Zaman said.

Since the initial quake, at least five aftershocks ranging from 4.5-magnitude to 5.2-magnitude have hit the area throughout Monday, according to the USGS.

Aftershocks can last for days and can sometimes be worse than the first quake.

Afghanistan is especially vulnerable to earthquakes as it sits on top of several fault lines where the Indian and Eurasian plates meet. The mountainous terrain of eastern Afghanistan is also prone to landslides, making it harder for emergency services to carry out rescues.

This quake was especially devastating as it hit at a shallow depth of 5 miles, making it far more destructive even at moderate magnitude.

In 2022, around 1,000 people were killed and thousands more were injured when a 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit eastern Afghanistan.

That, too, was a shallow quake.

The next year, three 6.3-magnitude quakes hit the western Afghanistan province of Herat in one week, killing around 1,500 people, according to the U.N.

Monday's quake comes at a challenging time for Afghanistan, one of the world's poorest countries, which is suffering from four consecutive years of drought and the influx of over 2.3 million Afghans who have returned from Iran and Pakistan this year.

"Below-average first and second season crop production and reduced livestock income limit their ability to stock food for the winter," the Famine Early Warning Systems Network, which was established by the United States Agency for International Development, said in a report last week.

Mushtaq Yusufzai reported from Peshawar and Mithil Aggarwal from Hong Kong.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping has cast his country as a force for global economic stability and pledged hundreds of millions of dollars to support its partners, at a time when President Donald Trump wages a global tariff war and has decimated foreign aid under his "America First" policy.

Xi's comments came during an address on Monday that is the centerpiece of a two-day summit orchestrated to play-up China's global leadership and its close and enduring partnership with Russia, as the two neighbors seek to rebalance global power in their favor at the expense of the US and its allies.

"We should leverage the strength of our mega-sized markets and economic complementarity between member states and improve trade and investment facilitation," Xi told world leaders in the Chinese port city of Tianjin for a summit of the Beijing- and Moscow-backed Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

The Chinese leader pledged 2 billion yuan ($280 million) in grants to SCO member states this year, and to set up a SCO Development Bank to provide "stronger underpinnings" for security and economic cooperation among the bloc.

Without naming the United States, Xi vowed to oppose "hegemonism," "Cold War mentality" and "bullying practices" in an address to political heavyweights from across the world, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan.

Those phrases are often deployed by Xi to criticize what he sees as a world order led by the US and its Western allies.

The summit is a showcase for closer ties between China and Russia, as well as the friendship struck up over the years by their two autocratic leaders.

The deep personal rapport between the two men was on show Sunday evening, when Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan hosted a welcome banquet for attending leaders.

Footage released by Russian state news agency RIA showed Xi and Putin gesturing animatedly and smiling as they chatted at the event, showing a different side of the typically restrained Chinese leader – and his warm and relaxed demeanor with his Russian counterpart.

The pair then walked shoulder to shoulder together after posing for a photo alongside other gathered leaders, with Xi gesturing for Putin to walk with him past the others, footage released by the Kremlin showed.

The SCO summit is also the leaders' first opportunity to meet since Putin's summit with Trump in Alaska earlier this month – and comes as Putin resists Western pressure to end his onslaught in Ukraine.

Just last week, Moscow's forces carried out their second largest aerial attack to date on Ukraine.

Observers say that Xi sees the gathering – and a massive military parade that he'll host on Wednesday in Beijing, expected to be attended by Putin, North Korea's Kim Jong Un as well as some two dozen other leaders – as a critically timed diplomatic push.

As Trump alarms nations with his global trade war and withdraws from international organizations and foreign aid, Beijing views the US as undermining the international order it worked to build – and sees an opportunity to ramp its own vision as an alternative.

Chinese officials touted this year's SCO as the largest yet, saying ahead of the event that 20 leaders from across Asia and the Middle East would join. In addition to Russia, China and India, SCO members include Iran, Pakistan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un examined a "newly inaugurated" missile production line on Sunday before a planned trip to Beijing to witness a massive military parade alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin.

During Sunday's inspection, Kim learned about the "overall condition of the state missile production capacity," North Korean state media reported on Monday.

Images published by KCNA appeared to show Kim at an undisclosed location inspecting several dozen missiles in various stages of production and talking with uniformed officers.

Kim's inspection this Sunday comes as he prepares to travel to Beijing, where China's military parade on Wednesday will mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II following Japan's formal surrender.

North Korea has ramped up its weapons program in the last few years, rapidly modernizing its armed forces, developing new weapons and testing intercontinental ballistic missiles that can reach almost anywhere in the United States. It has also deployed troops to fight with Russia in the Ukraine war, gaining crucial battlefield experience.

Kim made the inspection visit ahead of his planned trip to Beijing for China's military parade on September 3. - Korean Central News Agency/Korea News Service/AP

Kim has also shrugged off overtures from the new South Korean government and recently repeated his vow to build up the country's nuclear program and threatened to use it to destroy South Korea if attacked.

Just a week ago, North Korea tested two new air defense missiles after accusing Seoul of fomenting tensions at the border – days before South Korean President Lee Jae Myung was set to meet US President Donald Trump.

According to the KCNA report Monday, North Korea had "successfully fulfilled" its five-year plan to expand its missile production capacity.

"Various kinds of missiles were put into serial production," the agency reported, adding that Kim had ratified three new long-term plans "related to missile production capacity."

Kim's trip abroad this week will put him in the company of two dozen foreign leaders at a closely watched event hosted by Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

The parade offers the reclusive head of the world's most heavily sanctioned regime a rare opportunity to appear alongside other world leaders who are gravitating toward an alternative world order championed by Xi and Putin.

The trip will be Kim's first trip to China since 2019. Kim, who has only embarked on 10 foreign trips since assuming power in 2011, last left his isolated country in 2023 to meet Putin at a remote spaceport in Russia's far east.

North Korea and Russia have drawn closer together since Moscow invaded Ukraine, with Pyongyang sending both soldiers and equipment to aide Russia's fight. Experts warn that Putin may be providing military and technological assistance in exchange – potentially boosting North Korea's weapons and space programs.

After seeing countless wasteful "haul" videos on TikTok, McKenzie Mack was inspired to shop for a good cause

Mack buys things that people in her community need and donates them to Little Free Pantries in her area

A video of her donating school supplies went viral, racking up over 660,000 views

McKenzie Mack was looking for a way to give back to her community when she learned about Little Free Pantries.

Looking for fun ways to make "haul" videos, without unnecessary waste, Mack decided to start contributing to the pantries — zero-barrier donation spots where community members can leave food, essential items, books and more to support their neighbors.

"Viral restocking content usually glorifies overconsumption, so I wanted to find a way to give people that same content for a good cause instead," Mack shares with PEOPLE exclusively. "I researched nonprofits and donation opportunities in my area, and that's how I stumbled upon the Little Free Pantries!"

Mack, 28, frequently films herself going to various stores and finding items that can help the people who need it most, often taking suggestions from her comments section on fun themes — such as her most recent back-to-school haul.

Mack posted her first pantry restock video in May and the series has "gone viral ever since." Mack shares that each restock costs anywhere from $150 to $300, depending on the size of the pantry and what she is getting. Her recent restock of school supplies cost $255.

"I always include a range of food, fun, and essential items. Most of the restocks are gone within one to two days. It's fun to go back and see what goes the quickest," Mack says.

Inspired by the back-to-school season, Mack looked up school supply lists from her local elementary school, purchasing composition notebooks, Band-Aids, scissors, colored pencils, Post-it notes, and other supplies like headphones and water bottles. Her video went viral, amassing over 660,000 views.

"I was inspired to share donations on social media to hopefully give others that social push," Mack tells PEOPLE.

She hopes that sharing her videos online will inspire others to do something similar in their communities — and it has worked.

"I've been surprised at the amount of people who tell me I inspired them to donate to their local pantries! I have also seen more and more videos of other influencers sharing donations, which has been so cool," she shares. "It's that social push."

For those looking to get more involved in their area, Mack notes that every community's needs are different and encourages people to look for areas where people need help the most. She also emphasizes the importance of feeling connected to the work.

"Everyone has different passions, and I encourage people to find theirs! It doesn't have to start and end with Little Free Pantry donations," she says. "I have volunteered at food banks, canvassed for human rights, even cooked meals for single mothers."

"The more our community thrives, the more we thrive!" she adds.

People often treat boredom as something to be eliminated, a state that signals wasted time or lack of stimulation. Yet psychologists and neuroscientists argue the opposite: boredom can serve an essential function. By forcing the mind to pause, it creates space for reflection, sparks creativity, and restores mental energy. Here's how it works.

Why People Hate Being Bored So Much

Image via Canva/Kaspars Grinvalds

Before we get to the upside, let's talk about just how allergic people are to boredom. A 2014 study at the University of Virginia published in Science asked volunteers to sit alone in a room for 15 minutes with nothing to do. They couldn't press their phones, read books, or listen to music.

There was also a button that delivered a small but painful electric shock. You'd expect people to avoid the shock, right? Instead, 67% of men and 25% of women pressed the button at least once, preferring pain over 15 minutes of boredom. Some didn't even last six minutes before giving in.

This might sound extreme, but it makes sense when you consider how modern life conditions us. We're surrounded by endless stimulation: social media, streaming, email, and endless multitasking. Naturally, being forced to sit with our own thoughts feels uncomfortable. Yet that discomfort might be the very reason boredom has benefits.

What Happens In The Brain During Boredom

Researchers studying the neuroscience of boredom have found that the brain doesn't just "shut off" when you lose interest.

According to youth mental health researchers in Australia, networks like the attention system and executive control system wind down when bored, while the "default mode network" kicks in. This is the brain's resting state, where introspection, daydreaming, and self-reflection work.

In this state, different brain regions work together in interesting ways. The insula processes your internal body signals by helping you recognize feelings like restlessness. The amygdala, your emotional alarm system, notes the frustration.

Meanwhile, the ventral medial prefrontal cortex pushes you to seek something new or stimulating. Boredom works as a system designed to push you toward fresh ideas.

The Hidden Perks Of Being Bored

Image via Pexels/Andrea Piacquadio

Once you reframe boredom as downtime for your brain, the upsides start to stack up.

Several studies have shown that people perform better on creative tasks after a period of boredom. In one experiment at the University of Central Lancashire in the UK, participants were asked to copy phone numbers from a phone book. Later, they came up with more creative uses for plastic cups than those who didn't have the boring warm-up. Boredom seemed to prime their brains for divergent thinking.

Psychiatrists also point out that boredom is when your brain starts consolidating memories, replaying experiences, and simulating possible futures. That's why people often say they have their best ideas in the shower or on a walk. Your brain finally has the space to wander, connect dots, and deliver solutions.

Constant stimulation keeps your sympathetic nervous system—the one responsible for fight-or-flight—in overdrive. As researchers explain, removing stimulation through moments of boredom can calm this system and help reduce anxiety.

Without constant stimulation, people are forced to confront emotions that they might normally push aside. That can feel uncomfortable, but it helps with self-awareness and making intentional decisions rather than defaulting to whatever's loudest in your environment.

Why We've Lost The Art Of Boredom

Of course, these benefits only happen if we let boredom run its course. And that's the problem; instead of sitting with it, most of us fill the space with scrolling, streaming, or shopping. The same study that showed people shocking themselves also suggested that we've become so conditioned to stimulation that stillness feels unbearable.

Even kids rarely get the downtime that breeds creativity. As psychiatrist Ashok Seshadri at Mayo Clinic noted, many parents feel pressure to keep children entertained constantly. But letting kids get bored actually builds independence, resilience, and planning skills. Given a little space, they often create their own games, stories, or projects. In the long run, that's far more valuable than being handed a screen.

Learning To Be Bored The Right Way

Image via Canva/soupstock

So how do you actually put this into practice without losing your mind? Researchers suggest reframing boredom not as wasted time but as useful rest. Start small:

Pause before grabbing your phone. Give yourself 10 minutes of doing nothing. Let your thoughts drift.

Do low-stimulation activities. Take a walk, doodle, or just watch clouds. These activities let your brain sit idle without total disengagement.

Use boredom as fuel. Got a repetitive task? Let it trigger innovation. Studies show people often find ways to automate or improve boring tasks simply because their brains are desperate for novelty.

Let kids get bored, too. Instead of rushing to entertain them, give them paper, blocks, or even just an empty box. Their creativity flourishes when they have to invent their own fun.

There's even wisdom in old sayings here. A Zen proverb advises sitting in meditation for 20 minutes daily, or for an hour if you're too busy. It's basically another way of saying that the busier you are, the more your brain needs downtime.

The Sweet Spot

Of course, like anything, balance matters. Too much boredom can tip into lethargy or even depression. Studies show that excessive activation of the default mode network links to rumination and negative emotions. The key is short, manageable doses, not so long that you feel stuck.

A bride-to-be explained on Reddit that her future mother-in-law called her "selfish" for declining to wear her wedding dress

She said this has caused tension between her future in-laws leading up to the ceremony

"She told me I can wear it, I just have to either lose weight or alter the dress. I told her no," the woman said

A bride-to-be has been left in a tense situation with her future mother-in-law over the choice of her wedding dress.

In an "Am I the A------?" post on Reddit, a woman revealed that she was called "selfish" by her future mother-in-law after she declined to wear her old wedding dress for the upcoming nuptials.

"Mother-in-law and father-in-law had always wanted whoever their [25-year-old] son married to wear the mother-in-law's dress," the woman wrote. She explained, however, that the problem was her future mother-in-law's wedding dress is a U.S. size 4, while she is a size 16.

"When it came time to give a definite answer, I told my mother-in-law, 'I can't wear the dress because of our size differences,' " the bride-to-be continued. "She told me I can wear it, I just have to either lose weight or alter the dress. I told her no. She called me 'selfish.' "

The woman said tensions have risen between her in-laws as a result, as her father-in-law is on her mother-in-law's side, while her fiancé is on her side.

"Am I the a------?" she asked on Reddit.

The majority of readers said in response that the mother-in-law was being "unreasonable" and "rude" while siding with the bride.

"Your mother-in-law is absolutely unreasonable to think a size 4 dress can be made over to a size 16," one reader replied. "I remain just jaw-unhinged [and] flabbergasted that she had the audacity to suggest that you even try to lose enough weight to go from a size 16 to 4!!!! That is just ... incredibly incredibly RUDE!!!"

Another person called the mother-in-law's wedding dress request "really creepy."

"If the bride asks to wear the dress, that's one thing. Hoping your own daughter will want to wear your wedding dress is understandable. Expecting your daughter-in-law to wear your wedding dress, that's weird," the person wrote.

A third person added, "It's your wedding and not a sequel of theirs, you should be able to to choose your own dress."

The Dallas Cowboys have agreed to terms on a contract extension for a key, All-Pro defensive player. Obviously, it's not Micah Parsons.

Instead, cornerback DaRon Bland gets his deal, according to multiple reports Sunday: a four-year, $92 million extension with $50 million in guaranteed money.

Bland earned his first Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro nods in 2023 after leading the NFL with nine interceptions, including five that he returned for a touchdown. It was an excellent follow-up to something of a breakout rookie year with his five interceptions in 2022.

The All-Pro corner missed the first 10 games of the 2024 season while recovering from a stress fracture he suffered during training camp. Bland did not record an interception in his seven appearances after his return.

1989: Cowboys trade Herschel Walker to Vikings for picks haul

Now, after an offseason that already included an extension for tight end Jake Ferguson and, notably, not one for Parsons, the Cowboys have locked up their former fifth-rounder four days before the start of the season.

Here's what to know about Bland's extension:

MICAH PARSONS TRADE: Cowboys deal 4x Pro Bowler to Packers in blockbuster

DaRon Bland contract details -

Length: Four years

Value: $92 million ($50 million guaranteed)

Average annual value (AAV): $23 million

Bland's four-year, $92 million extension includes $50 million in guaranteed money, the 12th-most money in guarantees at the position and notably ahead of fellow Cowboys corner Trevon Diggs' $42.3 million in guarantees.

The deal's $23 million average annual value (AAV) is the sixth-highest of all cornerbacks, just behind Broncos cornerback – and reigning Defensive Player of the Year – Patrick Surtain II.

The Cowboys' decision to extend Bland instead of Parsons will be even more notable given its timing. Dallas traded Parsons to Green Bay on Thursday and extended Bland three days later.

The value of each player is obviously different, a statement backed up by the fact that the AAV on Parsons' new deal with the Packers is more than twice that of Bland's. Still, Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones has certainly put more of a microscope on how Bland performs after receiving his new extension, given its timing.

Polish tennis star Kamil Majchrzak has met the young fan who had a hat snatched from him in a viral video clip after one of Majchrzak's matches at the US Open.

Majchrzak gave the boy a US Open-branded bag of gifts, including another cap, and posed for photos alongside him, posting the encounter to his Instagram stories on Saturday.

"Today after warm up, I had a nice meeting," he wrote. "Do you recognize (cap emoji)?"

"Hello world, together with Brock, we wish you a great day," he wrote in another story.

The two first encountered each other when Majchrzak was signing souvenirs for the crowd, after Majchrzak's second round win against Karen Khachanov on Thursday.

The Pole took off his cap and appeared to pass it to the boy who was clutching a giant tennis ball with both hands. As the boy reached out to take the cap, a man standing next to him snatched it away and gave it to a woman who put it in her handbag despite the boy's visible protestations. The boy and the man appeared not to know each other.

The clip subsequently went viral on social media, with one X post alone gathering 10 million views.

Social media users identified the man as a Polish CEO, whose company was review-bombed with hundreds of one-star reviews on Trustpilot, all referencing the incident. CNN has not been able to independently verify the man's identity and has reached out to the company for comment.

After seeing the incident, Majchrzak launched a search for the boy, posting on his Instagram story, per Sky News, "Hey guys, could you help me find the kid from my match."

He later posted, according to Sky News, "I am impressed by the power of the Internet. We got it! All good now."

After defeating No. 9 seed Khachanov, Majchrzak was forced to retire during his third round match against Leandro Riedi due to a torn intercostal muscle.

Mark Hamill has been married to his wife, Marilou Hamill, for 47 years, and the couple recently revealed their secrets on how they have stayed happy in their relationship.

"Don't sweat the little stuff," Marilou, 70, said of how they have remained a solid in an interview with People published on Sunday, August 31. "And also, go in knowing you're not going to change anyone. So you have to accept their quirks and their behavior."

After Marilou made the comment, Mark, 73, jokingly chimed in, "What quirks?"

The Star Wars actor said he agreed with everything Marilou said, adding that "acceptance" and "communication" are essential parts of a successful marriage.

"I just think that when you find the right one, the odds are against you," Mark continued. "But if you do get lucky, you just have to hang on and be grateful that you were able to find that one."

Mark and Marilou met in the mid '70s at a dental office, where she worked as a dental hygienist. After they fell in love, the couple got marriage during a wedding ceremony in December 1978 at their Malibu home. They went on to welcome three kids: Nathan Hamill, 46, Griffin Hamill, 42, and Chelsea Hamill, 37.

There's no denying that the couple is still madly in love, and Mark shared a tribute to Marilou on their wedding anniversary in December 2024. "On This Day in 1978: I married my dental hygienist, Marilou York," he wrote alongside one throwback photo and one recent snapshot of the couple. "She cleaned my teeth & the rest … is history."

Hoda Kotb spent nearly two decades as one of the most recognizable faces on morning television. She joined NBC News in 1998, became a correspondent for Dateline, and eventually co-anchored Today—a role that made her part of millions of Americans' mornings. So when she announced in September 2024 that she would be stepping away from the show after 26 years at the network, fans were both surprised and saddened.

But for Kotb, 61, one tiny moment with her oldest daughter confirmed she'd made exactly the right choice.

On Sunday, August 31, the mom of two sat down with Kristen Welker for a Meet the Moment conversation, where she revealed the touching exchange that validated her life-changing decision.

"For 26 years I did similar things every single day. And one day, Kristen, in January I woke up and my alarm didn't go off at 3:30," Kotb recalled. "I went downstairs to my office and Haley ran down and she looked at me and said at 5 a.m., 'You really are here.' And I think in that tiny moment I was like this decision was right on so many levels."

Kotb adopted her daughter Haley in 2017 when she was 52, and welcomed Hope in April 2019 at age 54. Both adoptions came after her breast cancer diagnosis in 2007 left her unable to conceive.

Becoming a mother later in life has been transformative for Kotb, who told Welker: "The best decade—the best part of my life started at 50. Everyone's gonna talk about their 30s and their 20s... 50s and beyond to me is where it's all happening and it's amazing."

She credits the timing as perfect, despite what others might think. "Everything is right on time and I try to remind myself of that. Like I became a mom right on time, you know, this was the moment for me."

While Kotb admits she misses her NBC family deeply—remembering "walking out on the Plaza" and "holding Savannah's hand in good times and in bad"—she's found peace in her decision.

"I think both things you can hold in your hands, right? You can miss and love something and also be excited for the next thing," she said.

That "next thing" includes her wellness company Joy 101, which offers breathwork, meditation, and retreats. The venture grew from her own transformation after trying breathwork for the first time at 58. "After 10 minutes of doing it, I exploded in tears and I literally freaked out," she recalled of her first breathwork session. "I felt like someone had squeegeed my brain. I felt like I had clarity and energy."

In a video posted on the brand's official Instagram page in May, Kotb explained, "Joy 101 is for anybody who kind of wants a little bit of a change. Your life's going along fine. It's good enough. I mean that's what I felt for many years—good enough. This is for people who are tired of good enough. You want something more. Something better. So Joy 101 is kind of for everybody."

As for Today, Kotb's role didn't stay vacant for long. Craig Melvin stepped in as co-anchor alongside Savannah Guthrie on January 13. Meanwhile, Jenna Bush Hager continues to lead the fourth hour, which has since been rebranded as Today with Jenna & Friends and now features a rotating lineup of guest co-hosts.
