Navy helicopter and US fighter jet crash in separate incidents in the South China Sea

A U.S. Navy helicopter and a fighter jet crashed in the South China Sea on Oct. 26 in two separate incidents, the Navy's Pacific Fleet said.

A MH-60R Seahawk helicopter went down at about 2:45 p.m. local time "while conducting routine operations from the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz," the Navy said in a statement on social media. The helicopter was assigned to the "Battle Cats" of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 73.

Search-and-rescue crews safely rescued all three crew members, according to the Navy.

Following the incident, an F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter assigned to the "Fighting Redcocks" of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 22 also crashed in the waters of the South China Sea "while conducting routine operations from Nimitz," the Navy added.

Both crew members of the fighter jet successfully ejected and were safely recovered, according to the Navy.

"All personnel involved are safe and in stable condition," the Navy said in the statement. "The cause of both incidents is currently under investigation."

The USS Nimitz is one of the largest warships in the world and is currently the oldest American aircraft carrier in active service, according to the Commander, Naval Air Forces. The carrier is scheduled for decommissioning in 2026.

The USS Nimitz is on the return leg of its final deployment before the ship returns to the West Coast, USNI News, the non-profit news service of the Naval Institute, reported. The carrier left the West Coast on March 26 and entered the South China Sea on Oct. 17, according to USNI News.
